Scroll Left and Right in Excel

Copper Contributor

All of the sudden my right and left arrows on the scroll bar at the bottom right of a sheet stopped working. It won't scroll! I can only make it move forwards and backwards by using arrows. What did I do?

Here are some general steps that might help you. If the scroll bar arrows in Excel are not working as expected, there are a few potential solutions you can try:

  1. Check if Scroll Lock is On:
    • Sometimes, the Scroll Lock key on your keyboard might be turned on. Press the Scroll Lock key to toggle it on or off. The Scroll Lock key is usually located in the top row of your keyboard.
  2. Use the Scroll Bars:
    • Instead of relying on the scroll arrows, you can use the scroll bars directly. Click and drag the scroll bar to move left or right.
  3. Zoom Level:
    • If the worksheet is zoomed in or out significantly, it may affect the scrolling behavior. Try adjusting the zoom level to see if it makes a difference.
  4. Check for Frozen Panes:
    • Frozen panes can limit the scrolling range. Go to the "View" tab and check if there are frozen panes. If so, unfreeze them.
  5. Restart Excel:
    • Close and reopen Excel. Sometimes, restarting the application can resolve unexpected behavior.
  6. Update Excel:
    • Ensure that you are using the latest version of Microsoft Excel. Check for updates and install any available updates.
  7. Check for Add-ins:
    • Disable any Excel add-ins you may have installed to see if they are causing the issue. You can do this by going to "File" > "Options" > "Add-ins."
  8. Test in a New Workbook:
    • Create a new workbook and see if the scrolling issue persists in the new workbook. This can help determine if the problem is specific to your current workbook.
  9. Check Mouse Settings:
    • If you are using a mouse with a scroll wheel, make sure the scroll wheel is functioning correctly. Test the scroll wheel in other applications to verify its functionality.
  10. Check Excel Settings:
    • Go to "File" > "Options" > "Advanced" and look for the "Display" options. Ensure that "Show horizontal scroll bar" and "Show vertical scroll bar" are both checked.
  11. Reset Excel Settings:
    • As a last resort, you can try resetting Excel settings to their default. Be aware that this will reset various Excel options, so use this with caution. Go to "File" > "Options" > "Advanced" > "Reset." The text was created with the help of AI.

If this information did not help, additional information from you would help. Additional information such as Excel version, operating system, storage medium, Excel file extension. At the same time, a more precise description of whether this only occurs with a certain file (or file type), in certain environments (if and when other software is used at the same time - such as games), etc. would improve the proposed solution.
