Removing duplicate text strings in a cell based on another column in same row

Copper Contributor

Hi all,

I'm working on a data analysis project in Excel and would like to remove duplicate text strings in a column (let's call it B) based on its corresponding text string (in the same row) in column A. I have tried combing Youtube videos and excel help pages for this but I think my circumstances are a little more complex than the basic tutorials available.

To illustrate my problem, column A has the following text string for row 1: I would like to adopt a cat... and the corresponding row in column B: a cat when I retire.

As I would like to merge both texts into column C eventually but would also like to make the combined statement coherent (i.e. I would like to adopt a cat when I retire), I'm still figuring if there is a method or formula to remove "a cat" from column B first so that the merged texts make sense.

Would be grateful for any suggestions or tips! Thank you~
