I have one column that contains apple, pear, tomato, onion. from that column, I want to populate two different cells with an X. The first cell is Vegetable and the other cell is Fruit. How do I do that?

Well, since Excel doesn't know if an apple is a fruit or a vegetable, you need to provide a table where Excel can look up the correct definition.

 

Please see attached file where the table on the left is filled with the definition from the table on the right
