Question: labels in an Excel doughnut chart

Copper Contributor

Hi All,

Would anyone be able to tell me how I can (easily!) rename the labels in a doughnut chart? I'd like to have the label names in columns within a spreadsheet rather than individually renaming the labels in the chart itself. (I created the values for the chart based on the size of the segments I wanted in order to create a four layer calendar as a doughnut chart, but I don't want the segments labelled as numerical values.)

Thanks in advance,

Knowledge of Excel version and the operating system is a must have if you want to proposing a reasonable solution (Example: office version e.g. 2016 or 2019 or 365 web or 365 pro, etc) and your operating system (e.g. Win10 (2004), Win 10 (1903), Mac, etc.).

Rename legend entries

The legend can be renamed in Excel in a few steps.

To do this, proceed as follows. Open your Excel document and click on your chart.

In the upper bar you will find the "Diagram Tools".

Click on the "Design" tab.

In the "Data" group, click the "Select Data" button.

In the left window you will find the legend entries.

Click on an entry and select "Edit".

You can now rename the entry under "Row name".

Change the horizontal axis label

If your values are not displayed as legend entries but as horizontal axis labels, you have to proceed differently.

Open your Excel document and click on your chart.

In the upper bar you will find the "Diagram Tools".

Click on the "Design" tab. In the "Data" group, click the "Select data" button.

In the right window you will find the "Horizontal axis label".

Click on "Edit". Now enter your desired names or values for the legend.

Separate multiple entries with a semicolon.

Finally, click OK".

@NikolinoDE Thank you! This is perfect.

On a related note, do you know if it is possible to snap the data label of each segment to the segment itself, so that the text follows the shape of the doughnut? I know you can change the angle of the data labels, but this is slightly different.

This information should be able to help you.
