Number formats for pivot grouping

Copper Contributor

I have downloaded a file from Quickbooks.  I am using to create a pivot table in Excel office 365.  However,  I am not able to group the dates in my pivot table.  I am confident it has to do with the format but not sure what is needed to move forward.

Most probably you have texts which looks like dates, not dates which are actually numbers. Formatting won't convert texts to dates. You need to transform them by formula or using Data->Text to Columns applying Date and proper source format on the third step of the wizard.
