Issue in Excel charts - points order does not follow order on worksheet

Copper Contributor

I have a simple worksheet with several columns. One column contains dates, another contains fluid levels in a tank. I wish to show these columns on a simple line chart.

The issue is that, on a day when fluid is added to the tank levels are taken before and after the extra fluid is added. There are, therefore, two entries with the same date (but different levels). These entries are in the correct order in the worksheet.

When I draw a simple chart, however, the two entries are swapped so the chart shows the higher level (level after addition of fluid) chronologically before the lower level (prior to the addition of fluid). All I want is for the chart to show it's points in the same order as they appear on the worksheet.

There must be a simple answer but I can't see it. All I can think of is to change the date format to date and time and make sure the second entry is later than the first (which is a nuisance) or to pretend that the later reading was yaken on the next day (which is just wrong). Is there a better way to address this?

Changing the x-values to date+time looks like the most logical solution to me.

An extra column that is included in the x-axis values might be an alternative:
