How to use protected excel documents.

I am doing an online uni course and I have to use excel for diffrent things. Theres documents I need to type into but it says everytime i try to use it that it is protected and i cant edit it in any way. Is there a way that i can un protect them so i can use them?

Please note that there is a difference (or something else) about locking/unlocking a workbook and something different about locking/unlocking a worksheet, as well as locking/unlocking a specific cell range or cell.
