How to stay on the Home page instead of being kicked off and back to File

I realize this is an extremely basic question, but it's been a while since I've used Excel and it seems to have changed dramatically.  When I am working on a spreadsheet and want to either SUM the columns or Bold, center, italitize, etc.  , after I do one task, the program kicks me out of the Home page and puts me back in File.  It's really annoying when you have a lot of things to do in the Home page and have to do them one by one.  Thanks for your help

Well the behaviour you described is really weird, unless I do not fully understand what your issue is. You might as well share some screenshots that would showcase what exactly happens. Also what Excel version are you using? Try restarting the program + see if this behaviour is the same for other Excel files too.
