How to "marry" form responses with a specific person listed in another table in excel?

Copper Contributor

Please help me find a solution to my dilemma.  I have an excel table with hundreds of students, from whom I need to collect a lot of updated information. The form was set up in google forms and the replies are saved in google sheets.  The time matching an copying and updating manually each applicable field with about 40 different columns from google sheet to excel table is horrendous.  Is there a way to "marry" the information from the google sheet to the correct person on the excel table?

I can not attach a sample because the information I am collecting is confidential.

Any help of suggestions are very welcome.

Thank you.

There definitely are ways to do this. Without knowing the exact layout of the Google and Excel sheets you're working with, however, one can only give general suggestions.

Take a look at VLOOKUP,  or XLOOKUP for starters. Here's a helpful site if you need assistance in the syntax:  https://exceljet.net/excel-functions/excel-vlookup-function

It is basically mandatory for this kind of "marrying" or matching of data sets to have one field in each data set that is a reliable identifier. In your case, a student ID would be the ideal. Names are a poor second, for a variety of reasons, but they might be able to work if there's no ID.

You may not be able to post the actual data (for good reasons) but if you want further help, could I suggest making changing names to those of Disney characters and posting a semblance of your actual data.
