Formulas results not carrying over proper results until clicked?

I'm experiencing some strange issues with Excel. I'm an experienced user and need to do a basic VLOOKUP on a matrix across several columns. I lock in the absolute references and drag the formula across the worksheet and the references move properly, but the results are showing for the first lookup ONLY until I click on the cell, then click on the formula bar, then click off of the formula bar and the proper result shows. I've tried restarting my machine, excel, triple check my formulas. I am completely lost here and cannot complete my tasks

It's hard to diagnose based solely on a description, no matter how detailed.

Have you tried, instead of using VLOOKUP, the combination of INDEX and MATCH? Or the newer XLOOKUP function?

Partly I'm suggesting those just to get a total re-write of the function, coming at the situation from a different angle, so to speak.
