Font color and row numbers disapear changes in compatability mode

HI

I have been having some problems with excel 2016 spreadsheets  in compatibility mode.  It seems that line numbers and data from some point in my spreadsheet to the end of the spreadsheet disappear.  When I change the font or some other formatting of those cells the row numbers and data re-appear. 

Any Suggestions as to how to stop this?
