When I try to filter a group of columns, I get a new row #4 showing the column numbers above the row that I wanted to filter. See attach picture. The #5 row was the original row with the column headings. The filter function was "greyed out" for this row.
How can I get the filter to work. This has not occurred before.

You tried to convert a list into a table.
In the following dialog box you have to check whether Excel guesses your range correctly and whether Excel guesses correctly if the range includes headers in the first row. You can change both settings at this point.
After that you can change the table range in the Table Tools.
