External links (Closed workbook)

I am trying to keep an external link active without having to open the source file. I would like to have the source file update once I open the destination file without the destination file opening. Will I have to write a macro to accomplish this or is there a setting that already exists to accomplish this?

It is impossible because it is the behavior of Excel I guess。
