Excel SUM

Occasional Visitor

Hi, I have not used Excel in many years, and I'm glad to see the functions have been streamlined and simplified.  However, I went to a page to remind myself how to use the SUM function.  I did as was instructed, highlighting the column to the cell beneath, and clicking on auto sum.  The formular appeared as expected, but when I followed instructions to press return on that cell to see the summing up, I get no response.  Please can you advise me!

Do you mean that you see the formula in the cell?

  1. Make sure that the cell is not formatted as Text. If it is, select General or Number from the Number Format drop-down on the Home tab of the ribbon. Then select F2 and press Enter to force Excel to evaluate the formula.
  2. If 1. doesn't help: make sure that the Show Formulas button in the Formula Auditing group of the Formulas tab of the ribbon is not highlighted.
