Excel opening bugs - Microsoft app

Copper Contributor

Hi,

I'm currently experiencing 2 bugs with my Microsoft Excel Desktop app. After I updated my computer, when I tried to open an excel doc it started freezing on the first screenshot. It's weird because it won't show that the application is open in task manager, but the popup is stuck there. Any recommendations?

The other one is a little older but previously I used to get a completely blank document when I opened Excel, I would have to "X" out the document and reopen a few times before it worked.

These issues might be related to several factors, including recent updates, compatibility, or potential conflicts with Excel. Here are steps to address both issues:

Freezing on Startup:

  • Safe Mode: Try opening Excel in Safe Mode. To do this, press and hold the Ctrl key and then open Excel. This disables any add-ins that might be causing the issue.
  • Disable Add-Ins: If Safe Mode works, try disabling add-ins one by one to identify the problematic one. Go to File > Options > Add-Ins. Manage the COM Add-ins and Excel Add-ins.
  • Repair Office: Use the repair option provided by Microsoft Office. Go to Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features. Find Office, right-click, and choose the repair option.
  • Update Graphics Drivers: Outdated graphics drivers can sometimes cause issues. Check for any available updates and install them.
  • Check for Excel Updates: Make sure your Excel is up-to-date by going to File > Account > Update Options > Update Now.

Getting a Blank Document:

  • Template Issue: This blank document issue might be related to a default template problem. Try changing the default template. Open Excel, go to File > Options > Save, and change the default template.
  • Disable Hardware Graphics Acceleration: Sometimes, disabling hardware graphics acceleration helps. Go to File > Options > Advanced, then under the Display section, check the box "Disable hardware graphics acceleration."

If these steps do not resolve the issues, consider reaching out to Microsoft Support. They might have specific troubleshooting steps or be aware of any ongoing issues related to recent updates or specific system configurations. Also, keep an eye out for further updates or patches that might address these issues, as they could be related to specific versions of Excel or Windows. AI was used to support the text.
