Excel on Mac

Excel isn't allowing me to open several workbooks correctly. I need to amend them from Read only, as when updating & edited several worksheets it isn't saving certain things correctly. I have attempted the set or clear read only status. And can confirm the locked box is not ticked. I think my excel maybe isnt set up correctly. Please can anyone help?

@JWB2020 After opening as "Read-only" do File, "Save As...". Press "Options" at the bottom and remove the check-mark "Read-only (recommended)". OK, then Save.
