Excel not responding for 30 seconds

Copper Contributor

My Excel shows on the top bar as (not responding) when simply opening Excel, not even a file or worksheet. Then after 30 seconds it is fine until I close it and have to re-open it again.

My Com Add-ins section has nothing loading at all.

I've run the Microsoft Support and Recovery Assistant and even the repair Office/Excel function and it didn't find any issues. I have rebooted several times and Windows 10 and Office 365 is all up-to-date. And I tried disabling my AV software. So far, nothing has helped.

Please help.

Here are a few suggestions maybe can help to resolve the issue:

  1. Start Excel in Safe Mode: Launch Excel in safe mode to disable any add-ins or customizations that might be causing conflicts. To do this, press and hold the "Ctrl" key while opening Excel. If Excel runs smoothly in safe mode, it indicates that an add-in or customization is likely causing the problem.
  2. Disable Hardware Graphics Acceleration: Sometimes, hardware graphics acceleration can conflict with Excel and cause freezing. You can disable this feature by going to the "File" tab in Excel, selecting "Options," choosing "Advanced," and then under the "Display" section, checking the box for "Disable hardware graphics acceleration." Click "OK" to save the changes and restart Excel.
  3. Check for Updates: Ensure that both Windows 10 and Office 365 are fully up-to-date. Sometimes, outdated software versions can lead to compatibility issues and performance problems. Install any pending updates and restart your computer.
  4. Repair Office Installation: In addition to running the repair function, you can try a full repair of your Office installation. Go to the Control Panel, select "Programs and Features" (or "Add or Remove Programs"), locate Microsoft Office in the list of installed programs, and choose "Repair" or "Change" to initiate the repair process.
  5. Disable Add-ins: Even if the Com Add-ins section appears empty, there might be other types of add-ins enabled. In Excel, go to the "File" tab, select "Options," choose "Add-ins," and under "Manage," select "COM Add-ins." Uncheck any add-ins listed and click "OK." Restart Excel and check if the issue persists.
  6. Check Event Viewer: Open the Event Viewer on your computer (search for "Event Viewer" in the Windows Start menu), go to "Windows Logs," and select "Application." Look for any errors or warnings related to Excel in the log. The information might provide insights into the cause of the problem.
  7. Create a New User Profile: Sometimes, user profile corruption can lead to Excel freezing issues. Create a new user profile on your computer, log in with that profile, and see if Excel functions correctly. If it does, you may need to migrate your data and settings to the new profile or fix the existing one.
Another thing to check that's often forgotten is the default printer. Try switching the default printer or setting a default printer if Windows is managing printers (in which case there is no official default). The printer is important because I believe it's checked when opening the application and checked when accessing menus like File | Print.

The following hasn't worked yet:

  • I changed the default printer.
  • The hardware graphics acceleration was already off.
  • Safemode opens fine with no problems.
  • Updates had already been made.
  • Repair didn't repair anything.
  • There are no Add-ins enabled
  • What are the MS Actions Pane and Pane 3? Those are showing attached.
  • Migrating to a new user profile would be a LOT of work.
  • I'm not sure what I'm looking for with the event viewer.

What's interesting is that it is now working. I'm not sure which task fixed it.

I had previously ran the Office repair and it didn't find anything wrong.

I ran the System File Checker tool and it indicated that there were errors that it did fix in Windows.

I also now have two Accounts as logged in for Office 365. I have my work email and also my personal email at the same time now. My Outlook was giving me popups asking for my personal Office email password.

The Office 365 account is a paid version through work, so I know I need that login.
I'm afraid to remove my personal login knowing that it now works.
