Excel - how to export hex codes (like Ӓ) to .txt file

Copper Contributor

Years back (Excel 2003) it was possible to convert displayed foreign characters, to displayed hex codes (like Ӓ), by modifying cell display via the Microsoft Script Editor.

How can this be done using modern versions of Excel (Office 365).

I need to convert .xls files containing thousands of foreign characters, to .txt files (text+tabs) but first need to convert the displayed characters to hex codes (otherwise the .txt files are full of question marks).

Surely Microsoft have not removed this ESSENTIAL facility from current versions of Excel (?)

Any help in locating the current equivalent would be appreciated.

Many hours already wasted looking through Excel 'help' and online resources :\
