Excel freeze pane not working

Hello, I am working with Office 365. 

I was working on a sheet and trying to freeze the left three columns. However, once selecting and going to freeze, the table froze the top 12 rows and also added a grid to the table. Can someone offer advice on how to reformat freeze or why this is happening?

First, select Freeze Panes > Unfreeze Panes.

Then select the entire column D.

Finally, select Freeze Panes > Freeze Panes.
