excel formulas

im sorry to bother you, im new at this so please bear with me. i have a simple spread sheet with my income and outgoings in separate columns. Ive tried to autosum as per instructions, ie choose a cell below, click autosum, it gives me a formula in the cell as in =SUM(A4:A30) but when i press enter it does not add column it just enters the formula. what am i doing wrong?

  • Make sure that the cell with the SUM formula is not formatted as Text, but as General, Number. Currency or Accounting. If you have to change the number format to one of those, press F2 in the cell with the formula, then press Enter.
  • Make sure that Show Formulas in the Formula Auditing group of the Formulas tab of the ribbon is not highlighted.
