Excel 2021 construes a text entry as a mailto link

Copper Contributor

I entered a text entry $xyz@123-4567& in a Excel 2021 cell .  Excel 2021 construes it as a mail-to link and will not let me remove the link or format it as a text entry!  What gives?

Any assistance/clarifications from the community will be greatly appreciated.

By default, Excel will treat any value containing an @ as an email address.

You should be able to right-click the cell and select Remove Link from the context menu, but that appears not to work for you. So try the following:

Use the arrow keys to select the cell.

Press Delete.

Enter the value again, but prefix it with an apostrophe (single straight quote):

'$xyz@123-4567&

That forces Excel to treat it as text.
