In my understanding, you cannot do DD MMM YYYY for dates pre-1900s and there appears to be no easy way around it.

In saying this I had just a play with building a workaround of sorts. It's not the most elegant solution but it will convert any date you put into it, into the DD MMM YYYY format (column G).

Column A is your original dates. I suggest you copy cells B2 to G2 into your geneology spreadsheet. 

You can hide the columns you don't need.

I've also included the file I have made for you to see what I have done.
