Data>Outline doesn't show Subtotal at all

I have data (not in a table) and I want to subtotal but the Data>Outline group only shows Group and Ungroup.  There is no option at all for Subtotal.  This is Excel online.  What's the problem?

Outline (group) data in a worksheet

You can group (or outline) rows and columns in Excel for the web.

Note: Although you can add summary rows or columns to your data (by using functions such as SUM or SUBTOTAL), you cannot apply styles or set a position for summary rows and columns in Excel for the web.

The problem is that is Excel Online, so far it has limited functionality compare to desktop version. In particular, there is no Subtotal for outlines.

I would think that Excel Online, even with limited functionality, would have Subtotals.
