trying to get a sum at the bottom of the active order tab that counts the # of orders in a certain date range i how many are past due or due today or due in the week
and the Countif isn't working for me any help?

Since you have two boundaries for the range, COUNTIFS() shall be used. For example, for Past Due
=COUNTIFS(H2:$H$47, ">=" & TODAY()-7, $H$2:$H$47, "<" & TODAY())
