Let's take a very simple example.
In C1, you have the formula =A1+B1
If you copy this formula to C2, it'll become =A2+B2.
But if you change the formula in C1 to =$A$1+B1 and copy it to C2, it'll become =$A$1+B2.
The $ characters in $A$1 fix the reference to A1.
