Can you do us all a favor here and spell out a bit more fully what the circumstances are in which you want to have cells get colored. There are ways (Conditional Formatting) to have a formula that applies colors; red, for example, if values are negative; green for positive. The rules governing Conditional Formatting can be quite sophisticated.
