Complicated Conditional Formatting in list

Hi, I have an excel sheet prepared by another person. There is a list with selection, I would like one item from the list to change the background to black and the letters to white when selected. Nothing changes in the list when I format a cell and give it a formula. 
Please help.

@klaudia161 this should be possible using conditional formatting.  That said I don't understand if you want that particular cell formatted white on black or some other cell(s) or the whole sheet.  I also don't understand your comment about "Nothing changes in the list when I format a cell and give it a formula."

Maybe if you could share the sheet (no private/personal info) and more info on exactly what you are trying to do.
