Cannot add image to Header in Excel - Bad Request error

Copper Contributor

I have two users getting the same error in Excel. The error says bad request too long. In the past I could have the user select Bing then work offline. But we do not get any options. Everything I find online says to clear cookies. I have cleared them in all browsers but still get this error. I have verified both users Excel are up to date.

I got the same problem on the same day. I am in New Zealand... trying to include an image in the header and this "Bad Request" message appears. I tried to clear all browsers, change from Chrome to Edge, clear excel cache and nothing... Help us please.

Hello @dfountain86,  I am not sure if this is the solution, but, yesterday I changed the default browser and HTTP to Edge then today I changed back to Chrome. After that, the header is working all right. I could insert the logo I would like. It seems to me that I reset Chrome by doing so... just guessing. Now, it is working.

I also have the same error trying to upload an image for a header in Excel.
Thanks for the update. I will give that a try. I have one user that had the issue yesterday in the office. But today from home she does not have the issue. I am starting to think it has something to do with DNS or the way traffic is routing. When it worked for you did you happen to be at a diffrent location than you were when it did not work?
No, I was using the same computer. I have to insert logos in different workbooks to prepare templates. While I was doing that, it happened again. It seems like it gets overloaded by storing cache... anyway. I tried a second time and it worked. At the moment it is working ok.
Sorry, I meant were you in 2 different locations when it worked and when it didn't work? Like were you at work when it did not work and at home when it did work? Also, what did you mean by change the HTTP to edge. I know how to change the default browser, but I am unsure about HTTP.
I see. No, I did not change places. I work from home.

In the computer Settings > Apps > Default Apps find Chrome or Microsoft Edge. In the page that opens with a list of applications, scroll down and find HTTP. Change that from one to another and change back after a while.

I have a really low knowledge about internet language, but, I was reading that the request header used in HTTP protocols triggers a response. If the request header is faulty, the response does not happen. It can become faulty by different reasons, like caches. That is why I think that when I set HTTP to be managed by Microsoft Edge then I changed back to Chrome, I actually cleared Chrome "fault". There was something wrong with Chrome managing HTTP protocols. Anyway. Have a try. Hope it helps.

Thanks for the walk through. I finally heard back from Microsoft and they recommended the same thing. My users default and HTTP were set to Edge. So I changed it to chrome and sadly it did not work. Then I tried changing them back to Edge and it still did not work. Now I have them both set to chrome and we are going to give it time then change it back to Edge like you did the first time it fixed the issue for you. I will update this if that works or not.
Looks like changing the default browser from Edge to chrome then waiting over night worked. IF you have this issue but your default browser is already chrome. Change it to edge and wait overnight then try it again. Then change it back to chrome and wait if that did not work.

@dfountain86

Is there any new fixes for this? I haven't been able to fix this issue yet.

As far as I can tell it fixed it self. If you are still having this issue try what was mentioned above. Also check for updates. You can also try connecting to a diffrent network. For instance I had one user who would have this issue in the office but not at home. We suspected it was the DNS cause only one office was having this issue and another wasn't. We set the DNS to 8.8.8.8 and that might have helped. However, I cannot confirm that.

Solution

Another solution I found if you are working on the desktop app is to go into File>Options>General>Privacy Settings>and unclick turn on optional connected experiences.  Once you get the picture in, you can turn it back on but you do have to restart office for each.  I am teaching Excel and both one of my students and I had the same problem so it may be fairly common.

@hskyesong  Thank you. This issue popped up again today and this worked right away. Just have to click work offline and it lets you select a file. Thanks again.

bro you saved my life...gratitude
I am so fortunate this was posted so recently. This resolved the issue (note: I had to agree to work offline while uploading the image). Thank you very much @hskyesong!!
