Broken links between charts on Word and Excel

Copper Contributor

Hi experts! The super helpful Ricardo from Microsoft support sent me.

So I have this huge Word document with about 50 charts in it. Those charts were copied from a big Excel spreadsheet, which is where all the data in them links to. The original Excel file has been lost. I've been able to recover another backup that has about 95% of the charts on it. But all the charts in Word still link back to the file that doesn't exist, and I can't make even minor formatting changes to them without error messages about the missing data.

Ricardo could not recover the other file - so the question is: How do I make the charts on my Word document link to a whole different Excel file? It should be as simple as selecting a new region for the data to come from, but that's not an option it gives me. I don't want to delete every chart and have to cut and paste and reformat them all back again.

Does my problem make sense and can anyone help? I'm running Windows 11. Word and Excel are both v. 2211, 64-bit.

Thanking a genius who can save my life's work, in advance
