Automatic updates of links despite disabled

Copper Contributor

Hello Community - I am working with a workbook that contains links to external sources which I do not have and cannot obtain. Also, I do not need any kind of updating those links, the original values are fine for me.

However, despite the automatic update of links is deactivated (and the respective warning appears, asking me if I want to activate), the links seem to be updated nonetheless, directly after I open it, and thus I get "#VALUE!" errors in all cells with external links.

I had this issue in the past, and vaguely remember that one explanation could be that the original file has been created in another version than the one I am opening it.

Perhaps there is a common solution for that problem?

Thanks, FJ

How to control the startup message about updating linked workbooks in Excel

To stop an automatic update, click on ...

File –> Options –> Advanced –> General –> Uncheck “Request update of automatic links”.

You have already made these settings as far as I could gather from your text...or?

Settings:

File -> Options -> Trust Center -> Trust Center Settings -> External Content.

From there, choose the top option for both items.

In the end, if none of this helps.

.. Try analyzing your workbook with Excel's own add-in "Inquire" and finding and removing the ghost links.

The trail might be of interest to you:

Formulas -> Reference to external workbooks

Cells -> With Validity Criteria

Cells -> With conditional formatting

Areas -> Named Items

Hope I was able to help you with this info.
