RoamingProfileSupportEnabled - referred to in other policies desc but no policies designed to set it

Brass Contributor

Hi,

I am preparing the deployment of Microsoft Edge (Chromium), I've downloaded the MSI and GPO templates and have started going through them. I've set everything I pretty much need to but have hit a hiccup which I'm hoping for some clarity on.

I wish for all AppData to save to the Roaming profile instead of Local profile for my users. This is doable on Google Chrome by setting the policy named "Enable the creation of roaming copies for Google Chrome profile data" to "Enabled" which then sets the "RoamingProfileSupportEnabled" registry entry to "1". There does not appear to be a policy which sets this functionality for Edge but in the policy named "Disable synchronization of data using Microsoft sync services" it states in the description "Do not enable this policy when the policy 'RoamingProfileSupportEnabled' is enabled." - this proves that the functionality is there in some sense or will eventually be there. I tried to manually enter this registry key in HKCU>Software>Policies>Microsoft>Edge and when you launch Edge it does not load up the application unfortunately but it does create the folder "Edge" and "User Data" inside the Roaming AppData folders. So potentially Edge is just crashing because of this key. If I remove the registry key or set it to "0" then Edge works again but the data is still stored to Local AppData.

Is functionality supposed to be enabled in v79 or v80 (beta)? Or is this something for future development? This is the only thing causing me to not roll this out for our users currently.

Thanks in advance,

Mike

@MSAlf enabling RoamingProfileSupportEnabled does disable the AAD sync....  but does not create the roaming file.

Beta 84.0.522.11.

So there is no solution yet? Do we have to wait for the new Edge settings in Intune, which will come hopefully next week?

@JeroenBurgerhout The mentioned setting has little to do with Intune. It is missing for domain joined and GPO managed systems.

Intune has most / all of the setting that GPO also have, but since users Intune laptops keep the local profiles on they're laptops I don't see the relevance here.

We are currently using a subset of settings on Intune equal to GPO / Domain managed systems.

Yes, 83.0.478.44 and 83.0.478.50. All same on the “western front”. We’ll keep eye on it.

Nope, all the same using 83.0.478.54 and 83.0.478.56.

No change in 83.0.478.58 and 83.0.478.61.

Roaming Profile Support will be included in V85

You can test in in V85 Beta

Iam using 85.0.564.18.
I just set:
REG_DWORD RoamingProfileSupportEnabled to 1,
Results in edge://policy
RoamingProfileSupportEnabled true Platform Huidige gebruiker Verplicht OK

No file in AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Edge Beta
So, nothing seems to work at te moment.
And, according the documentation, it disables cloud sync, which we do not want....
IMHO that setting is only used if you want to change from the standard path, i.e: AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Edge Beta
I've tested with Dev-Version 86 and RoamingProfileLocation set to a network folder -> profile.pb is written. What is shown on edge://sync-internals/ ?

One day we will see it in production, but … 84.0.522.59/61, nope, not yet.

Hi!
84.0.522.61, nope. But in 85.0.564.41 I noticed that current user profile folder “Microsoft\Edge\User Data” was removed, nothing else I couldn’t spot, but user I test with does not have roaming profiles enabled, we will see.

Good morning Thilo,
What setting beside "RoamingProfileSupportEnabled" on 1 do you have in place?
Why do you only sync the favorites and have everything else turned off?

Regards, Henno

I was so excited when I saw that v85 would support roaming profile like Chrome - )we then sync the profile.pb file via UEV.)

However, I cannot get this to work for Edge!

Installed 64-bit v 85.0.564.41 (Stable)

I've set "Enable using roaming copies for Microsoft Edge profile data"

and I've set "Set the roaming profile directory" to ${roaming_app_data}\microsoft\edge

I've also verified that "Disable synchronization of data using Microsoft sync services" is not enabled.

I do not even get the appdata\roaming\microsoft\edge folder created (I tried pre-creating, didn't help)
