How to open a IE link in Edge browser on Windows 11.

Copper Contributor

I am trying to open a web link in MS Edge in IE compatibility mode. Everytime I launch the link it give me a an error saying "Can't reach this  page. The connection to the website was reset. Error Code: INET_E_DOWNLOAD_FAILURE"

Same link works fine on Edge windows 10 in IE compatibility mode.

Windows 11 Edu - Version 21H2 - OS build - 22000.708

MS Edge version - Version 102.0.1245.39(64-bit) same as in windows 10.

Could you please let me know what's going wrong here.

Regards,

Vishnu.

Hello Vishnu458,

The error "INET_E_DOWNLOAD_FAILURE" means that your MS Edge or Internet Explorer browsers have corrupted temporary files, cache, or cookies, and the site's content could not be downloaded. However, IE compatibility mode in Microsoft Edge offers you a way to use the legacy infrastructure of IE inside Microsoft Edge.

You can follow the below ways to open an IE link in Edge browser,

In order to enable IE Mode from the Edge browser, you must open the edge browser,

  • Firstly, launch the Microsoft Edge browser from the Start menu.
  • Now, click the ellipsis button on the top-right corner.
  • Then, choose the Settings option from the drop-down list.
  • Next, click on the Default browser option.
  • Now, under Internet Explorer compatibility, click on the drop-down menu beside the "Allow sites to be reloaded in Internet Explorer mode" option and select Allow.
  • Lastly, click on the Restart button.

You must add the site URL to open in the Edge browser.

  • Firstly, open Microsoft Edge, then click on the ellipsis button in the top-right corner to select the Settings option.
  • Now, tap on the Add button from the IE mode pages section.
  • Then, type/paste the website address you want to visit in IE mode and click on the Add button.
  • Next, accessing the website allows you the option to Reload in Internet Explorer mode.

Clear temporary files from MS Edge:

  • Firstly, open MS Edge, click on the Menu, and select Privacy Security.
  • Next, under Clear browsing data, choose data to clear.
  • Then, click on Clear to clean MS Edge temp files.

Restore advanced settings in Internet Options:

  • Firstly, type in inetcpl.cpl in Windows search and press Enter.
  • Now, navigate to the Advanced tab.
  • Then, click on Restore advanced settings.
  • Next, scroll down to the Security section under Settings and untick Do not save encrypted pages to disk.
  • Lastly, click Apply and OK.

Perform System File Checker (SFC) Scan:

  • Firstly, type cmd in Windows search, right-click, and click Run as administrator.
  • Now, type in the below command and hit Enter,
    sfc /scannow

Note: You must wait until the scan completes.

  • Lastly, reboot your system.

Thus, I hope the above workarounds help you to fix the error, and you can open an IE link in the Edge browser. However, If the issue persists, you can update it here.
