AlwaysOpenPdfExternally behavior

Copper Contributor

What we use:
AlwaysOpenPdfExternally
AutoOpenFileTypes (.pdf)

What we want:
Do not fill the downloads folder with these pdf files.
Don't have to click separately when downloading the pdf to open or download it, but what the name of the gp refers to: AlwaysOpenPdfExternally.

Can this be expected to be implemented in some form of GP?

@adorj_706 Hello!  Just to confirm, what is the default PDF reader on your devices?  When using the

AlwaysOpenPdfExternally policy, if Microsoft Edge is the default PDF reader, PDF files aren't downloaded and will continue to open in Microsoft Edge.

In regards to the request about filling the downloads folder, I do see the team is investigating a feature that would allow customers to configure the download folder to a temporary location for files that are opened through the AutoOpen policy.  I have passed on your feature request to them.

Also, would you be able to provide more details/steps to reproduce what you are experiencing with the AlwaysOpenPdfExternally policy?  Thanks!

Hello!
Thanks for the reply!
Of course, we don't set the AlwaysOpenPdfExternally Group Policy (and disable the built-in pdf reader) to then redirect it back to the built-in pdf reader using the application associated with the file extension :)
We use Adobe for pdf display (for other reasons).
We don't want to relocate the download folder for this purpose !!! (For other intentional downloads, we want the default downloads folder to continue.)
For example, is there a barrier that pdf files that are only intended to be opened (not with the built-in reader) are also placed in the [user]\AppData\Local\Temp\MicrosoftEdgeDownloads\ folder?

Apart from the above, nothing else needs to be set up to reproduce the phenomenon.

Thanks!
