Documentation for Azure Information Protection
(formerly Azure Rights Management) has been updated on the web and the latest content has a
September 2016
(or later) date at the top of the article.
The documentation is now rebranded to match our new name, to support General Availability on 1st October, and announced at the Microsoft Ignite 2016 conference. For more information, see our recently published blog post,

. Be sure to watch this blog for more information about the technical changes and new features.
Documentation that was specific to the preview of Azure Information Protection is now integrated with the rest of the documentation, and the starting
documentation page
has been updated to recommend the latest information. You might notice that URLs to the documentation pages have now changed for the new service name, but with automatic redirects, you should still be able to get to the documentation if you do use the previous links.

- Updated with information for administrators or consultants, who are looking to understand how Azure Information Protection can classify, label, and protect documents and emails.

Requirements for Azure Information Protection
- Updated for information that is specific to classification and labeling, and was previously in a

page. Removed information about subscriptions, which will now be documented on the
Azure Information Protection
site.
Applications that support Azure Rights Management data protection
- Updated the table for iOS and Android, for the Azure Information Protection app that supports viewing protected emails, and other file types (text, images, pfile). The Azure Information Protection app replaces the RMS sharing app for iOS and Android. The documentation for the
Active Directory Rights Management Services Mobile Device Extension
is also updated for this new app.
Frequently asked questions for Azure Information Protection
- Revised in structure to accommodate separate FAQs for the new classification and labeling functionality, and FAQs for data protection that is provided by Azure Rights Management.
Quick start tutorial for Azure Information Protection
- Revised to merge what was two different quick start tutorials into one. This updated tutorial includes classification, labeling, and protection that was in the quick start tutorial for Azure Information Protection, and sharing a document by email with document tracking that was in the quick start tutorial for Azure Rights Management.
Azure Information Protection deployment roadmap
- Updated for two different deployment paths: Classification, labeling, and protection, or a data protection only solution.
Migrating from AD RMS to Azure Information Protection
- Updated the
Prerequisites
section to clarify that previous keys that were configured for Cryptographic Mode 1 are supported by Azure Information Protection as archived keys.
Hold your own key (HYOK) requirements and restrictions for AD RMS protection
- Updated for a new
Limitations
section, which currently includes no support for Office 2010 or Office 2007, and a limitation with the Do Not Forward option. Note that this AD RMS protection feature with Azure Information Protection remains in preview.
