Hello insiders, we’re listening!

Over these past months we have been busy reading all the great feedback you've been sending us through the "Send feedback" smiley, here on the insider forum, and to our @MSEdgeDev Twitter handle. As we go through the feedback, common themes, popular suggestions, and bugs with broad impact emerge. We've been highlighting this "top feedback" within the team, and we'd like to share it with you as well. Starting with this post, we will regularly summarize the most significant feedback we are hearing from you and give you an update on the status of each item. We'll also highlight some of the changes we've made that were inspired or prioritized because of your feedback. Check out the list below, and of course use this forum thread to share your thoughts and discuss.

Your feedback has directly led to many improvements. Here are just some of the most notable, now available in the Canary channel:

  • Dark theme is here!  The most common request over the last several months is to add a dark theme to Edge – check it out in Settings under Appearance today!
  • Need help translating? Bing Translate is now built into Microsoft Edge – look for the prompt offering a translation the next time you encounter a page that isn't in your language
  • Do you want more control over the data your browser keeps?  Check out the privacy controls in Settings under Privacy and services, including the option to Choose what to clear every time you close the browser.
  • Don’t want to see the favorites bar all the time? There is now an option in Settings under Appearance that allows you to show it only when you open a new tab.
  • Are you annoyed by all the ads competing for your attention while you're trying to focus?  Try Reading View for a distraction-free reading experience – look for the book icon in your address bar.
  • Want to sign-in and sync to AAD accounts just like your Microsoft account?  Sign-in and sync of AAD accounts is now available.

Here are some top feedback topics we plan to address in the coming months. (Of course, plans can change. We'll make sure to let you know if timing or direction shift on any of these.)

Planned to be addressed in the Canary channel in September 2019:

  • An option to prevent auto-play of video and audio when you open a website
  • A round of improvements to scrolling experience, with more (including performance) to come down the line
  • The addition of a favorites button to the toolbar, to provide quicker access to favorites

Planned to be addressed in the Canary channel in October 2019:

  • Inking on PDFs
  • When you sign-in to the browser, your sign-in profile picture will accurately be kept up to date.
  • When you have more than one profile, better handling for opening links and attachments in the appropriate profile.
  • An option to set your own photos as the background image on the New Tab Page
  • Enable search in the extensions store
  • A bug fix for users who receive an “Administrator Mode Detected” notification (advising them to close and relaunch the browser in non-administrator mode) each time they launch Edge
  • ClickOnce deployment of Windows applications from web pages

The team is reviewing the following feature requests and we'll be sure to let you know if they're getting ready to show up in one of our channels:

  • Feature requests for the New Tab Page, including the capability to turn off the news feed, to hide the Bing search bar, to change the search provider, to rename tiles, and to support Dark Theme
  • Bring back features from the current version of Microsoft Edge such as tab set aside, tab preview, "Ask Cortana", and the reading list
  • Make it easier to share web content with other users and apps
  • Provide an option to set a custom home page
  • Update the user interface with the Fluent Design System, including less rounded tabs
  • Support themes from the Chrome Web Store
  • Allow sign-in to the browser with a Google account
  • Provide different options for sorting favorites
  • Provide run / open / save / save as options when downloading files

Finally, there are a few areas where you've told us our quality needs to improve. We are investigating these areas and will fix specific bugs when they are identified:

  • Edge should use less memory and CPU than it does
  • Scrolling should feel smoother, both for web pages and PDFs
  • Update does not always work reliably
  • Drop-down menus in some web pages are not working

You can help in these areas by keeping the bug reports coming. Whether you have a major issue or a minor glitch, if you see something, click the "Send feedback" smiley and tell us briefly what happened. Every report helps!

Thank you all for being insiders. Your feedback motivates and inspires us, and we genuinely appreciate it. We look forward to sharing these updates on a regular basis to show how you're helping to set the direction of the next version of Microsoft Edge.

And where would that option be?
Then open it as a new tab.

People, always remember"different strokes for different folks". In Windows there's often more than one way to do things or different ways at different moments. But, lots is subjective and personal preference with computers; not really a right or wrong sometimes. The thing to do is make sure people are fully aware of what (all) IS available to them.

Case in point...

The, REALLY, big, meaningful phrase here is, "For me..."

@Drew1903 (The, REALLY, big, meaningful phrase here is, "For me...")

I doubt Chrome and Firefox and most common browsers in the market did that just for me ... !!!

@HotCakeX  Edge settings somewhere

The meaning was that individuals have various ways that THEY like to do things (for them, it's what's comfy), may be different from someone else and that's ok, was the point.

You had hit a nail on the head with that phrase.

Drew

@Drew1903thank you, i know how to workaround this issue, but i was asking for better smooth and easy browsing with Edge, i was very clear ...

there isn't such option in the settings

@HotCakeX i know, i was asking to add it as a option

@David Rubino A little strange issue i hope to fix .

when i double click URL in a "manage Favorites tab", it open 2 times, one in the current tab (manage favorites tab), and the other open in a new tab

Not needed when there is already the Middle Mouse Button that does the same thing.
Which version of Edge insider?
on Version 78.0.262.0 (Official build) canary (64-bit) it's all fine.

@HotCakeX  it is Dev. Version 78.0.249.1

Yes that version had problems with favorites page but got fixed in the next builds.
funny thing about Canary and Dev is that the same problems Canary has get passed on to the Dev, except that Dev channel gotta wait 7 days to receive the fixes but Canary channel usually gets it in a day or two. gods help the beta testers that need to wait 6 weeks @_@@

Hi @MarsMas, I am having trouble reproducing the issue you have described.  When I double click on the items in Manage Favorites, they open in a new tab, and take me to that tab.  If I am missing a step please let me know, so that I can reproduce the problem, and get a bug filed on our developers.  Thanks - Elliot

Hi @HotCakeX, you will often see issues in Canary that are fixed within a couple of days, as the builds roll out.  We try to pick the most stable builds each week for our Developer channel, but sometimes an impactful bug slips in.  This should not happen too frequently, and as we get more of our features fully complete, the frequency should drop even more.  Beta should be even better, and we will be servicing bugs that get reported as we go.  The major release will come out about every six weeks, but there will likely be other updates for one-off bug fixes in between.  Thanks - Elliot

@Elliot Kirk  ok, here how it goes,

Click edge menu/ Favorites / Manage favorites /

(Mange Favorites will open in a new tab)

Now when you double click any URL in that tab, it it will open 2 times, one in "Manage Favorites tab" (current) and another in a new tab

i hope i am clear this time

@MarsMas

It's normal behavior.

do you double click on links? Nope, same goes here.

You see the picture, if you click on the pink area (on the website's text name which when you hover your mouse over it the mouse cursor turns into a finger instead of arrow), that's where it's the link, you just have to either click using Left Mouse Button to open it in the favorites page or click using Middle Mouse Button to open it in a new tab or Right-click and select open in a new tab.

However, in the green area, if you double click, it will only open it in a new tab and not the favorites page.

This behavior is normal. whatever they change will ruin the current system, it's what is expected from links and bookmarks.

sorry but you're doing it the wrong way by double clicking on the website's text name which is a link, it should be clicked only once (either MMB or LMB). if you want to use double-click, just move your mouse a little tiny bit to the right and double click on the green area.

@MarsMas

Hi Mars,

I cannot exactly repro what you describe.  However, if you click on the Favs name, underlined with red, that is a link & will open on the same page as Manage Favorites.  If you click anywhere else on the item's bar, that will open it in a new tab.  I cannot make one open in both locations simultaneously; one or the other depending, as stated, where clicked.

@HotCakeX I understand if i am doing it the wrong way, Edge should not allow me to do so
