Top feedback summary for September 24

Hello insiders, we’re back again with our weekly update to the top feedback summary.

Welcome to readers from the Beta channel who are seeing some of the work from the past 6 weeks light up today with a major update to Beta. Remember, if you are using Microsoft Edge Beta you can install the Dev channel to see the weekly progress that we’re sharing in these feedback updates. You can install and run Beta and Dev at the same time on the same device, and if you log in with a work or school account, you can even keep things like favorites and passwords in sync between the channels to make it easy to switch between the two. Just head over to https://www.microsoftedgeinsider.com/download to get the Dev channel (and the Canary channel!)

This week we’re happy to highlight a new setting which allows you to control the ability of media to automatically play when you browse to a page. The new setting can be found in Settings by choosing Site permissions and then Media autoplay. You can choose from two options which restrict whether video and audio can play automatically. If you choose Limit, media will autoplay based on how you’ve used media on that site in the past. If you choose Block, all sites will be blocked from playing media automatically. Give this a try and let us know how it’s working for you. We intend to invest more in this feature going forward, and are considering changes like making this a site-specific setting, and prompting users with an option to block autoplay when it happens.

This week we also have two new items on the list:

  • We’re getting complaints that opening a new tab is too slow.
  • Insiders are requesting a prompt when closing a window with multiple tabs, asking if users just want to close a single tab versus all tabs.

Here is the full updated list of top feedback:

I wouldn't say it could hurt but it is annoying indeed @Deleted .

@LarryE1946 opening new tabs from Favorites works since like IE7 times. Just press middle button on it. Like for any other link.

@That_s_Me Yes, but not with focus. Opens in the background. I prefer all my links to open in a new tab with focus and would really like the option to configure it that way.

@That_s_Me

I have it and I'm on Edge Dev Version 79.0.279.0 (Official build) dev (64-bit)

@matsmcp @David Rubino

Please pass on the Google integration. What would be the point of adding it? I'll switch browsers if it comes to that.

And I second the "Please fix mouse hijacking" request. The bug has been present since Old Edge and you have migrated this "feature" to Edge Chromium. It's incredibly annoying.

@FrankDeNunzio hm, I have same version of Edge. Windows 8.1 x84. You have Windows 10? On IE11 it worked even in Windows 7

@JimRome

Are you using any power saving flags. I had this problem and fixed it by disabling the 'calculate windows occlusion' flag. I opened 28 tabs, and with the flag off, it took 1:30. With the flag on, it took 9 minutes.

These are examples I have using F12

I am able to open New Private Window via right-click on pinned taskbar icon. I'm on W10 1903, Edge Dev Version 79.0.279.0 (Official build) dev (64-bit)

@cjc2112

those colors are beautiful!

Microsoft can add something like this to let us modify new tab page (this is from Google Chrome Canary Version 79.0.3925.1 (Official Build) canary (64-bit))

however I don't mean to use the same colors as Google chrome does which are ugly compared to the colors you chose in your examples, Microsoft could create a better UI compatible with fluent design language for this color picker too.

@David Rubino

+1 for "Make tabs more square and less rounded, like the current version of Microsoft Edge".

I would extend this to the whole interface, in fact. The current version looks and feels more "at home" in Windows 10 than this Chromium-based one..

In the current version, look at not only the tabs, but also the address bar, three dots menu, the settings sidebar.. it looks and feels much more like a standard Windows app and fits in with other Windows 10 apps.

Thanks!

@David Rubino

9/24 release broke Beta version for me. Here's the screenshot of what I'm getting on every single site, even edge's own about page, it spins to infinity and eventually just stops with "This page is having a problem":

edge_fails_toload_page.png

OS: Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 1809 build 17763.737

Edge version: 78.0.276.11 (Official build) beta (64-bit)

The only thing that seems to be working as a workaround is to add this flag in the shortcut: "--disable-features=RendererCodeIntegrity"

I'm evaluating Edge Chromium for a company wide deployment once the stable version comes out and this bug doesn't give much confidence in the browser.

@ilyado

I do not know if "Aw, Snap" and "This page is having a problem" are the same. Does the problem also happen in Chrome 78?

This page, which I just stumbled on and remembered your post, says it may be due to Chrome's new sandboxing and security DLL injections?

@David Rubino

I don't think that under any circumstances you should allow google account sign in for Microsoft Edge. This could potentially result in Google interfering with Edge development in the future, it is much harder to appease the users if you need to remove the feature at a later date when Google  unfairly changes its T and C's.

This is of course just my opinion but it feels like it would open a can of worms as Google is a competitor, and quite an aggressive one at that. Google has a long track record of breaking the functionality of their services in other companies web browsers, so when they do this with google account sign in on Edge it will be Microsoft who will get the blame from Edge users who were using Google sign in.

It's a risk assessment issue before a functionality assessment issue and these risk issues are easily avoided by not giving Google the opportunity to play hard ball in the first place.

Exactly, your opinion is the fact.

I honestly don't know who even suggested that, all I see in the posts is people who are against it. I wanna hear their argument and reasons for requesting that.

@David Rubinowhen you hover over the Back button in Dev 79.0.279.0 , it's not centred. Please fix :) backbuttonhover.png

@Bdsrev It's the same with Settings and more on the other side of the screen

@ikjadoon I was getting the "Aw, Snap" error message on Thursday with Chromium. It was 79.0.3925.0, and every updated batch that came out that day for 79.0.3925.0 kept/remaining the same message. Especially on youtube. It would load, and a few minutes later crash with the "Aw, Snap" message. When 79.0.3926.0 came out on Friday it was fine with no more of that error, and today Chromium is on 79.0.3927.0 and still fine. I noticed that "Aw, Snap" happens when there's a new bug or new bug from testing/tweaking a new feature that causes the browser to crash or crash in certain areas.

Chrome 78 is their "Beta" version that's updated every six weeks or so, but I think slightly ahead of Edge's updated "Beta" version in time frame. So they may or may not being having the same problem although Edge Beta is adding features not found in Chrome Beta thus something that might bug out in Edge Beta might not in Chrome Beta and vise versa. Simply because Chrome doesn't have that feature specific only too Edge or Chrome has that specific feature not found in Edge Chromium.

I guess the best thing to do is drop down to Edge Dev and/or Canary and see if the error is replicating on those browsers on your computer. If they aren't than it might be specific to Beta, if they are it could be a carry over bug or something only you're experiencing (especially if others dont report it) to your computer/settings.

I didn't notice until just now! Ya they need to fix this one
@Bdsrev It's fixed in Edge Canary.
