Top Feedback Summary for September 23

Microsoft

Note: This is no longer the most recent top feedback summary. You can always find the latest at https://aka.ms/MSEdgeTopFeedback.

Hello, Insiders! We have some big news to share today, something y’all have been patiently waiting for, so let us jump right into it. Note: This post is going up before our Dev channel update has been pushed out. That has been delayed and we expect to update our Dev channel tomorrow.

First up, we have two new items being added under Planned this week. Enable customers to pin Favorites menu to the side of the screen has been an ask from users who were used to the favorites management in Edge legacy. We’ve also heard that Some passwords are not saved for some users, and we plan on addressing that. While we don’t have any details for these items right now, you will see info about these first here.

As you may have heard yesterday at Microsoft Ignite, we’re excited to announce that the Dev channel for Edge on Linux will be available next month! We are updating Make Edge available on Linux from Planned to Planned for October.

We’ve had questions about the distribution for Linux once it’s available. For the initial launch, we are supporting Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora, and OpenSUSE. Starting next month, you will be able to download and install both .deb and .rpm packages from our Microsoft Edge Insider website.

We’re sure you’re curious about what is available with this version of Edge! While we are working to ensure that every feature in our Windows and Mac Dev channels is available in our Linux version, there are a few features that will not be available at launch. Sync (and its related services), read aloud, and differential updates will not be available immediately with Edge on Linux. We are working hard to bring these to users as quickly as possible, while also ensuring it’s done right. Once we know these changes are implemented, you will see them mentioned in Josh’s summary posts. Additionally, if any of this changes before we launch, we will work to ensure y’all are notified.

We continue to shape this browser based on your feedback. Have something you feel would improve your browsing experience? Thanks for the update,
All I want from Edge team is to give sync issues the highest priority because it's directly related to customer data and keeping it safe is important.

about the new addition to the list, "Some passwords are not saved", not much info about that.
is it related to any possible sync problem?
or is there other reasons? such as length of passwords, characters used in passwords etc that are causing that issue?

I'd like to see Vert Tabs released to more folks than what is currently being done... I'm still waiting...

Dennis5mile

Please bring Acrylic back to Edge!
Ya terminó el verano :(

@MissyQ
A new release and all the problems are still there, after almost 1.5 years..

- Middle click mouse button on tabs bar to open a new tab.

- Drag a tab to the favorites bar to quickly add it there.

- Dark Mode for PDFs for reading.

- Move the "Force Dark Mode for Web Contents" from "Flags" to "Appearance" in Settings and let us customize the websites that we want to enable or disable it on them.

- Everything in my PC is in dark mode, even the "Force Dark Mode for Web Contents"
But somehow every time I open Edge I get this white page for a few seconds that blinds me for like a minute... and every new page I open it loads in white page until the page opens.. and if the website or my connection is slow then that stupid useless white loading screen stays for longer and I have to look away until it's done loading............

- When everything is using dark mode, all icons and buttons turns to dark grey which are almost not visible at all!
https://imgur.com/dffCEKD

-"Ask users if they want to close all tabs when they close a browser window"
Why this isn't added yet????

-And when is this going to be fixed so I can actually move to Edge?????
https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/discussions/importing-firefox-history-amp-passwords/m-p/13990...

-And where is the History Sync ??????
You promised almost a year ago that this will relesae this summer which is already over now, don't make promises you can't keep.

So, What did you say that is added or fixed again in this release ?????

I strongly with almost all of your points. Some basic and important features are due from more than a year and continuously getting delayed. Most important of them all is "History Sync" that was planned for Summer that officially over in August but don't know when it'll be over for Microsoft :(

Also, white screen during start-up is also an issue when using Dark mode.

"Dark mode for PDFs for reading" is also very helpful feature. I want to add on to this for "View page source" also. As a web developer, we quite often use this option but it opens in white page that should not happen at all if you are using dark mode.

Edge team, we know you are doing amazing job and already made Edge a better option than Chrome for professional and consumers, but please implement these features ASAP so that we can completly switch to Edge.
Yes, we are missing a lot without History sync option. Also, there is no word for that anywhere. I expected something related to this in Ignite but nothing about this there also.

Team please update on History Sync progress. Summer also over.

@MissyQ

What about support for Playready DRM and/or Widevine DRM in Linux version of Edge?

Netflix and Microsoft agreement that 1080p (and more) is officially only accessible via IE/Edge browser in Windows will be expanded to also include Edge browser in Linux?

@MissyQ

As even Microsoft stepped into android, it will be good to include the #nearby-sharing flag which is included in the chromium, every android phone supports it, so please enable that.

(this is in chrome stable)

How about making Vertical Tabs a switch in "edge://flags" ? Then those that want to try it can without waiting for the luck of the draw.....

Dennis5mile
Don't forget that initially they promised history sync to be available when the browser officially launched, which resulted to be false; then they promised to release it at the beginning of the year, again untrue (at this time they said that History Sync was not "enough important for the community"). Finally, they lied to us again with this summer scam. However, I have to said that I'm not surprised, this team has long track of unaccomplished goals and false promises.

@Omar-Os

And along with the dark mode issues in desktop Edge, there's also the even worse dark mode issues in Android Edge. For me I need desktop and Android browsers that work together, so I can't use either until I can use both, and after having become unexpectedly sensitive to bright screens early this year I simply can't use Android Edge at all. It needs Android Google Chrome's #enable-force-dark flag, or much better Android Google Chrome Beta's #darken-wesites-checkbox-in-themes-setting flag (because it's a right pain having to go to the flags to turn the #enable-force-dark off on the odd site it's bad on, then all the way back to flags to turn it on again), or best the ability to use the Dark Reader extension like Android Firefox (old, or new 'Daylight' Fenix varieties) which can remember which sites one doesn't want made dark.

And generally Android Edge could do with the beta being brought up to the same Chromium version as desktop Edge, desktop Chrome and Android Chrome instead of being left on Chromium 77! Android Chrome versions go hand in hand with the desktop versions, same version updates within a couple of days of each other at most, public, beta, dev and canary; and new Android Firefox public, beta and nightly are sometimes actually ahead of desktop Firefox. While Android Edge is left in the misty distance of prehistory. Ooh, Microsoft added collections to Android Edge too ... but haven't caught up on ANY of the other and far more basic missing features that would let me use it.

As for the lack of History (and open tabs) sync in both desktop and Android Edge - I thought it was pretty unbelievable you lot at Microsoft didn't have that ready for the first public release. The fact it's STILL not done after all this time when you are doing all this far less fundamental stuff is just utterly flabbergasting. As I've said before, there's a view that nowadays a lot of people use desktop Google Chrome because Google Chrome is what they use on their Android phones, NOT the other way round. If Microsoft really want desktop Edge to get a really significant share of the browser market, they need to put a LOT more effort and importance into making Android Edge properly competitive on Android, and THAT includes giving much more priority to full and easy desktop and Android syncing. It's all very well saying 'our users say blah blah is or isn't important', but your current users are a small minority of the potential users you presumably want, Microsoft. You need to look at the fact that for a lot of people their phone browsing is more important to them than their desktop browsing, so - given the usefulness of and need for phone-desktop syncing - Android browser choice drives desktop browser choice for a lot of people. And Android Edge currently sucks compared with either Android Chrome or new Android Firefox.

It is astounding how they still will never even mention the words History Sync, or give any updates or responses to anyone.

Is the underlying Sync platform that fundamentally broken?

How Linux support is a priority over completing the year-late core functionality is beyond me.

I seriously hope that Microsoft considers supporting the FreeBSD community. Porting the Linux version over to a working application on FreeBSD is usually quite simple. As a FreeBSD user, I would be happy to assist the Microsoft team in BETA testing their product or in any other way possible.

Thanks! :smile:

@MissyQ

Thank you for sharing and super excited.

"Add "text notes" feature to PDF files" is feature which several people asking especially those who upgrade from Microsoft Edge legacy and students are using this feature a lot.

It would be nice to increase priority for this feature.

@MissyQ  As always, thank you for the update. Agreed with others that sync issues should be a high priority, and any updates welcome.

Also, want to press on the request to "collapse tab groups" that are available in Chrome. Can this be added as a feature? I would add that this would be quite helpful, particularly as sync works.

bradmacdonald_0-1601052280366.png

Muy cierto @rjtiwari10, necesitamos la sincronización de historial para dejar completamente a Chrome.

I'm glad you finally made a sidebar for Favorites! Please make this available for History and Downloads and Edge will FINALLY be on the direction to become a good browser!

Sidebars are great for keeping you in your workflow instead of being as obtrusive as fullscreen menus. And please let us pin the Downloads and History buttons to the toolbar too! As of now, you can only do so with Favorites, but there's not much of a point since the Favorites bar exists.
