Top feedback summary for October 29

Microsoft

Note: This is no longer the most recent top feedback summary. You can always find the latest at https://aka.ms/MSEdgeTopFeedback.

Hey everyone, we have a lot to cover today!

First, after some consideration we believe the feedback requesting a home button has been addressed. In part this is because a home button option has always been a part of Chromium and has been available in the insider channels from the start. To enable this option, just open the Settings and more (…) menu, choose Settings, and then choose Appearance from the left pane. Toggle the Show home button option and specify which page you’d like to open. However, we wouldn’t get this feedback if we didn’t have some kind of discoverability issue. Rather than just turn the home button on by default, we think most users who want a home button in the new Microsoft Edge were those accustomed to having one in their existing browser. For these users, we now import the home button setting from other browsers when you install an insider channel. Those who used to have the home button will have the home button in Microsoft Edge by default. Of course we can’t be sure we’re thinking about all possible angles here, so we’d like to hear from you on this topic. We’ve started a discussion thread here in the forum and we’d love to hear from you.

We have heard similar feedback about the need for the ability to sort favorites by name. Like the home button, this option is available, but it may be hard to find. To sort favorites, open the Settings and more (…) menu and choose Favorites then Manage favorites. Use the left pane to find a folder of favorites you’d like to sort. Then right click on any empty space around the list of favorites, on the right side of the screen. You will see an option Sort by name in the menu that appears. We are planning to make this more discoverable, but we’d like to get your ideas first. We’ve posted a discussion thread and invite you to stop by and join the conversation.

Another topic we’d like to discuss with you are some of the download options we’ve seen requested a lot, such as “run”, “open”, “save”, and “save as”. We’ve got some questions for the community as we decide how to approach this feedback. If you’re interested in this topic, please head over to the discussion thread and let us know what you think.

Also, we’ve heard the request for theme support, and specifically to support themes from the Chrome Web Store, just like we support traditional extensions. We’re happy to let you know that we are working on this. It’s not without challenges though, so we don’t know yet when we’ll be able to get it up and running. In the meantime, we’d love to talk to you about how you think about themes and what you use them for. We’ve started a discussion thread on this topic. Stop by and help shape the future of this feature area!

Finally, this week we have two new top requests and two schedule delays:

  • With the addition of our PDF inking feature, we’re now seeing more of you request ink support for web pages.
  • We’re seeing an increase in requests for a share button on the toolbar
  • We will be delivering the ability to customize tile names on the new tab page, but we’re running a bit late and this is now planned for November instead of October.
  • We’ve been making some improvements to scrolling and have more on the way. We’re waiting for the next round of these to be fully deployed to the Canary and Dev channels before calling this area “addressed” and writing up a summary of what we’ve done. Look for this in November instead of October as previously planned.

Environment friendly feedback - aka recycled since none of it has been done and is  blocking for a browser change

1. Google integration - No thanks. I value privacy - not Google profit

2. Fix the favorites icon - it's still the wrong one

3. Add these buttons to the favorites menu

clipboard_image_0.png

3. prevent mouse button hijacking

4. Fix Epub

We already talked about this that the favorites button is the correct one. you need to update your Windows 10 to see the changes.

This is the correct favorites button, not the one in your screenshot, it belongs to very old Edge classic version

Epub also doesn't need fixing, they already said it's going to be dropped from classic Edge and there is no plan to even add it to the new Edge.

About mouse hijacking, do you have any websites as an example that actually hijack your mouse?

It seems that what you are talking about is actually called Mousetrapping

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mousetrapping

Mousetrapping is a technique used by some websites (often tech support scam sites[1]) to keep visitors from leaving their website, either by launching an endless series of pop-up ads or by re-launching their website in a window that cannot be easily closed (sometimes this window runs like a stand-alone application, and the taskbar and the browser's menu become inaccessible). Many websites that do this also employ browser hijackers to reset the user's default homepage.[2]

the reason why I asked you to provide websites as an example is so we, the users, can test them and see whether they can Still do that Or their action gets blocked by Tracking prevention of the Edge insider and other built-in security measures.

One of the areas of concern from an Enterprise/  business point of view is the inability to switch off Microsoft news feed from the home page.

Without this option, we would never allow Edge as a browser as the news feed is productivity counter productive.

@mindlogik

Hi,

you can enforce these settings using group policy

see, you'll get a clean new tab page. soon you will be able to set a custom background for the new tab page as well.

Is Windows Timeline integration is on the way? I use this feature quite alot and very handy when I search something in the Timeline and will show the website that I visited weeks ago. Nice to have one place to do it through Windows Timeline. I rather have this as a feature for Edge than relying on installing Extension.

Also Tab Thumbnails would be nice, especially able to glance whats is the content for that tab without fully switching into it.

@archtech

Hi,

Tab thumbnails is supposedly, allegedly coming, but, don't quote me on this, as the saying goes; and I don't have a timeline for it.

Oh and speaking of Timeline :xd: That one I can answer. It will be when Edge C replaces current Edge in the OS.

It can only be had with the betas by adding extensions, although, none I tried seemed to work all that well.

Cheers,
Drew

do you have a source for it? because
the Timeline (TaskView) is connected to browsers using the History sync. so as long as History sync is not implemented into Edge insider, the TaskView won't show history items of Edge insider.
Timeline (TaskView) will start showing Edge insider web history once History syncing is enabled and added to the Edge insider browsers.

I also love tab thumbnails, either the big thumbnails that appear above tabs like in Edge classic or the ones that appear below them like in Google chrome.

Excellence meant Microsoft, IBM, Linux, HP....

@David Rubino  Hi, any chance we could get the option to hide the profile button? I find it takes up unnecessary space...

@David Rubino Do you plan to add  video pop-up feature?

Picture in Picture feature already exist, but no obvious way to use it. In YouTube for example, you have to right-click twice to show the native context menu and then you can see and click the Picture in Picture feature in the menu.

Since the feature already baked in, it simply needs a nice button that user can click. This can be done with a floating button on a video what can be shown when hovering using mouse or single tap to show the button when using touch. Or have the Picture-in-Picture button on the toolbar, but only shown when video is playing on that tab.
That's actually a very nice idea,
when you said "only shown when video is playing on that tab" I thought about Global Media control button that appears when there is something being played, so the pop up button can be added to there as well without occupying other spaces.

btw I use this extension made by Google and works with Edge insider browsers too
