Top feedback summary for October 22

Microsoft

Note: This is no longer the most recent top feedback summary. You can always find the latest at https://aka.ms/MSEdgeTopFeedback.

Hi everyone, here is the latest top feedback update. This week we cover a new issue which was addressed immediately, one item which has been addressed, and a couple of scheduling changes.

Last week we saw a spike in reports about Microsoft Edge crashing when a new tab was opened. This issue was fixed in Chromium and the fix should be in the Canary and Dev channels now. Please let us know if you’re still having an issue with this by choosing the Send feedback smiley or commenting here in this forum post.

This week we’re delivering on a top feature request with the arrival of inking mode for PDF files. We have finished rolling out the feature in it’s initial state. However, we’re already planning on some enhancements to this feature, specifically color customizations and new pen types including a highlighter. Let us know what you think of PDF inking and what additional functionality you’d like to see in the thread below.

Meanwhile, you may notice that the top feedback labeled “Option to set a custom photo as the New Tab Page background photo” has changed from “Planned for October” to just “Planned”. This reflects a bit of a delay internally. We are spending more time iterating on the interaction model and visual design of the New Tab Page and we had to temporarily reassign resources. Nonetheless, we are aware that many of you are eagerly awaiting this feature and we intend to get back to it as soon as possible. We hope to get it into an Edge80 build. We’ll update the status when our plan for this one becomes more firm.

There is also a small delay in addressing “Need for better handling of links when there is more than one profile”. We had expected to deliver this in October, but it now looks like it will be November.

@HotCakeX since you mention it, there are actually two crashes we know about right now.  The one on the thread you linked to shows up as Canary just closing itself randomly.  We've actually pulled the build with that issue in it, and reinstalling Canary from www.microsoftedgeinsider.com will get you a version without this crash to begin with.

The other crash happens when you right-click the back button, and is still in the build even after you reinstall it, so please try to avoid doing that for now :smiling_face_with_smiling_eyes:

No 80.0.316 for me, still .315

Hi,

Thank you, I wasn't aware of the latter :)

Yes, as @josh_bodner said, they pulled that problematic build from their servers, so now .315 is the latest.

Thanks for the info.
There is also a 3rd area that keeps crashing the browser Version 80.0.315.0 (Official build) canary (64-bit) at least it does for me which I reported a few days ago via Mr. Smiley. It is located in "Profiles/passwords". When you click on the eye it crashes the browser.

However, when you click the 3 "..." and choose "details" and then the eye at the bottom for the password field all works well as it is designed to.

Still on 315. Re-installed again.
When I leave it idling after installation, it seems to stay open.

After installing some extensions (MS Store Chrome Store), Canary closes after a short delay.

But then, after removing all extensions and resetting Canary. it still crashes after a minute or two, even when idling in the background.

Note: the official Edge beta doesn't crash with identical extensions installed.

Feature Request: This feature request is highly needed for the Public Sector for Federal Agencies, which is the ability to digitally sign a pdf in Edge with a Smart Card. If the function was added to digitally sign a PDF with a Smart Card, many federal agencies wouldn't have to depend on the 3rd party application Adobe Reader for this one specific function and could fully leverage Edge for PDFs instead. @David Rubino @josh_bodner

This crash's symptoms appear to be different than the one experienced in Canary .316.

I think it's better to open a separate topic about it.

@HotCakeX there's a chance it might be the same issue.  The sync issue really blew up in 316, but it was also present in 315, just with much fewer hits.

You're right, though everything is back to normal after updating to Version 80.0.317.1 (Official build) canary (64-bit)

 Hope they stay that way :crossed_fingers:
