Top Feedback Summary for December 8

Microsoft

Note: This is no longer the most recent top feedback summary. You can always find the latest at https://aka.ms/MSEdgeTopFeedback.

Welcome back to the Top Feedback Summary, Insiders! We’re adding on a couple of new things this week. We also wanted to take this time to remind everyone that we will be taking a holiday break this month. The last two weeks of December will not have any updates to this list (or our Dev channel). We’ll remind you all next week!

Last week, we closed out the item about being able to use voice search on google.com, and we wanted to provide more clear instructions and clarify the availability for this feature. This is currently available to users in our Canary and Dev channels for Windows only. If you would like to use this feature and aren’t able to, we encourage you to try running Edge using this command line in Command prompt: msedge.exe --enable-features=msSpeechRecognition. We are slowly rolling this out to all users across all platforms (same with history sync) and wanted to ensure that was clearly laid out for everyone.

We are excited to bring two new things to you all this week! One is an update to PDFs, Users can get back to where they left off in PDF documents. This item is Planned, however we don’t have a time frame on when users will see this addition to the PDF reader just yet. The next item on the list is something we have seen frequently requested across social media, Allow users to turn off the “Disable developer mode extensions” notification. The team currently has this Under Review, and we will provide more information about this item once the review is completed.

That’s all for this week. We’ll see you all next week for our final 2020 update on your top feedback!

Here’s this week’s updated list:

Hi @MissyQ

Thanks for the update!

Is there going to be a different feedback list for Edge mobile (Andorid/IOS)?

the mobile Edge browser is equally as important and it's been lagging behind in terms of feature and Chromium version (10 versions behind now, 77 vs 87), and recently there has been security issues in Edge using old Chromium.

lots of posts have been made in the forum, it'd be great if developers posted articles or at least replied to threads about Edge mobile, and what the future and road map is for it, if any. thank you

also, Edge stable recently received sidebar which isn't listed in the official change log and it's something that is supposed to come with the next version of Edge. I think it's really important to get a response on this from Edge team.

https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/discussions/what-is-going-on-edge-stable-has-sidebar-now-and-...

@MissyQ

"Allow users to turn off the “Disable developer mode extensions” notification. The team currently has this Under Review, and we will provide more information about this item once the review is completed."

Is this what you are referring to?  Which is found under settings/system

DevTools 2020-12-08 140507.jpg

I've had it for the last update not counting todays, which I've not gotten yet on Canary, Version 89.0.726.0 (Official build) canary (64-bit).

Dennis5mile

@Dennis5mile It can't be. She said that this is Under Review, how can it be released?

@Dennis5mile

I don't think so, that option only disables F12 shortcut for opening developer panel.

the notification she is talking about is something else:

https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/discussions/disable-quot-developer-mode-extensions-warning-qu...

@MissyQ I don't see Smart Copy in Dev, might be one of them Controlled Feature Rollouts, but at least next week you have to include this sentence: "Have you noticed Smart Copy yet? Send us feedback and tell us how it's working!" because I see it in Canary. It was available in version 88.0.705.9 for Canary, see this post: Smart Copy is Available in Edge Now! - Microsoft Tech Community

Dear Edge Team,

Please look into the performance and especially website-loading speeds ASAP, it's been unrealistically slow for the past few weeks. Dev and Can have been honestly annoying to use just because of this bug alone, slowing every single website loading times down by a considerable and noticeable amount.

It's really unpleasant, and despite everything else being top notch, I think this should be a priority - I've asked a couple of other people on Dev too, and they also say it's much slower than the stable and beta channels. I love to test features early and give feedback in the browser, but I'm considering going back to Beta personally just for the time wasted waiting for anything to load. Thanks a lot in advance.

As last week, you really, really need to re-open the issue of putting open/save/save-as on the native download shelf, wrecking every one of the custom download manager ui extensions in the Edge and Google Chrome extension stores. It's going to cost you a lot of potential migrants from Firefox and Google Chrome. GET THE OPEN/SAVE/SAVE-AS CHOICE OF THE DOWNLOAD SHELF. Having it there makes all the extensions offering better, more advanced download UIs unusable, removing the large choice users had - and still have in Google Chrome and Firefox.
Maybe it won't come next week, that would be because it's not ready yet or not stable enough to move from canary to dev channel.

@DavidGB

and yet you haven't answered that why those extension developers shouldn't change their extension to be compatible with the new system.

should Microsoft ask THEIR permission for making a change that PEOPLE asked for?

there is always 2 sides of a story.

some guy thought Edge is like Chrome and made an extension, now boom, it doesn't work with Edge because that's Not chrome, Edge is another browser.

Opera, Vivaldi, Brave, they all have deeply changed their browsers and lots of extensions don't work on them.

just because a browser is using Chromium under-the-hood does Not mean that all extensions should be compatible with every browser.

this is a fair point to be honest that I'm describing.

like if I was a browser developer and wanted to use Chromium, I shouldn't be afraid that oh if I do this, if i change that, then some extensions made for another browser (Chrome) won't work with my browser. if my browser was so similar to Chrome, then there is no point in making my browser, everybody could just use Chrome and stay happy.

8% of all Google Play apps vulnerable to old security bug | ZDNet (MS Edge is included in this list)

Did you fix this?

Hi @MissyQ -- The green ellipse to indicate an update is hard to spot on dark theme. I thought the green dot was easier to see.

@MissyQ Any info if the speech recognition team is working on fixing the bugs I've reported before releasing it into the open?

Re: Web Speech API support ? - Page 2 - Microsoft Tech Community

I think these are rather critical errors and they are easy to reproduce :(

@Dennis5mile

This is the notice people want to disable.

Screenshot.png

If you have developer extensions installed, it shows up every time you start Edge. Based on my experience, if you do not dismiss the notice by clicking on the X in the upper right hand corner each time it appears, then Edge will automatically disable all developer extensions, which is very annoying.

My understanding is that developer extensions are treated this way in Chromium to prevent websites from surreptitiously installing them and bypassing the safety features in the web store. This allows these extensions to do things like inject ads or change your settings in weird ways (set your search engine to some random website).

I'd like to disable this because I use some extensions that are too radioactive to be hosted on the official web stores (ahem, bypass paywall extension). The only way I can install them is in developer mode, which means I see that notification every time I open Edge.

I would really like to see the favorite popup menu return. Since the last two or three updates it has been replaced with a tree menu, which is slow to appear.

It also has this web-stuff "feature" of showing grey boxes instead of text for a second.

Albeit it only taking maybe a second to show the actual content this really makes it feel slow.

@MissyQ  Really good things that come for the Edge. But I still lack a certain function, namely a separate clear cache implementation. Either in the settings on the left in the bar, or directly in the profile. Would be cool if there was something like that in the next update. Because if I program something on my local server and I change an image (hero), you can see it in Chrome and not in Edge. Chrome clears the cache and updates the page completely when you press F5. Edge doesn't do that.

Can you explain more, not sure what image hero is. your comment is in German and got auto translated.

and a better explanation of the problem you are experiencing, the one about having to refresh.

Edge has cache management:
