Top feedback summary for December 3

Microsoft

Note: This is no longer the most recent top feedback summary. You can always find the latest at https://aka.ms/MSEdgeTopFeedback.

Hello everyone, we took a break last week but we’re ready with a new update to the top feedback this week.

First, there’s some trending new feedback this week about favorites sync issues. For most the symptom is that favorites are simply not syncing, a known issue which we’re working on at the highest priority. Others are reporting that deleted favorites are reappearing, or that duplicate favorites are showing up. We believe these are symptoms of the same known issue so for now we’re tracking them together on this list. We expect to address them as soon as possible this month.

Next up, some other new plans:

  • In direct response to your feedback we are planning to add the ability to keep cookies for specific sites when you’re clearing cookies. We’ll start a conversation here soon to help us better understand the problem and potential solutions.
  • We expect the ability to change the location for news on the New Tab Page to arrive in January
  • An option for a share button in the toolbar is planned, though we’re not ready to set an expected date just yet.

Meanwhile, some of our planned changes for November didn’t quite come in on time. We now believe that better handling of links for multiple profiles and search in the extension store will come in December, whereas the ability to change the title of New Tab Page tiles is now expected in January.

Finally, there’s one topic which we’re putting back in this list. In September we shipped the ability for users to limit or block autoplay via settings. Unfortunately, after several bug reports and some investigation, it turns out that the “block” functionality in the browser didn’t actually block autoplay and we turned this feature off in mid-October. We still want to ship a great autoplay experience that includes full block and granular control over what sites can and cannot autoplay, but don’t want to roll out a broken experience in the meantime. We’re sorry for the confusion and takeback, and hope to have things working well sometime next year.

Here’s the full updated list of feedback:

Well, here is a sort of compromise.  Use Bing.com as Start-up page & or Home page and make the/its Address Bar whatever SE you want.  Just a thought... Same photo, nice top bar menu items & Feeds @ the bottom.  Good customiseable Settings in the hamburger.

Thanks mate, I'll do that for now. I'm not giving up hope though!

@jraff

Sure ok cool.  Nice you might like the suggestion, for now, at least.

Drew

@Dustin Walters

Dustin, honestly, for myself (& maybe others, too) I am more concerned with having Edge HTML Features & abilities in Edge C than, cosmetics.  Also, personally, with selected OS Accent colours my Edge C tab bar is not all dark, even though I use Dark in both the OS & the browser. Yellow, realistic folders is cool, I agree, but, what is happening is mostly in the name of consistency, even, if not quite as pretty or real-looking, I'm afraid.

Cheers,
Drew

No veo la opción de "Agregar Notas" que hay en Edge. ¿Piensan eliminar esta opción en las futuras versiones de Edge? La verdad es que me gusta mucho esta opción de agregar notas en paginas web.

@matsmcp

Besides from that we still miss the yellow folders, epub, set aside and the rest of the functions from Edge. The functions that will this Edge into something else than a chrome clone

Features that already make this more than a Chrome clone:

  • Tracking prevention
  • Collections
  • MSA integration
  • Favorites button in toolbar
  • Reader mode

@JordanQ

Jordan, yes, absolutely, there IS, indeed, heaps of positives & good stuff, already.  What Folks, still, want, you're right shouldn't take the spotlight away from all the good things that ARE there.  Good on you to remind of there being yin AND yang to this.

Cheers,
Drew

@JaimeFSA

Hola Jaime,

Salud
Drew

There are many, many people wanting this and asking for it to be in Edge C! Much of it has been put in for PDFs. We are, still, begging & hoping for it to be in the browser, itself. Stay tuned & keep your fingers crossed.

Cheers,
Drew

"Nice to see PDF support is being worked on, I really hope this will be ready for the Jan 15 release.  There are still a lot of missing features - toolbar buttons not visible, no search bar, no support for certificates or complex forms..."

PDF FORMS support ! Absolutely crucial for us. Currently, Edge cannot handle my organization's annual employee performance reviews, which every employee and their manager must be able to fill out. Until that happens, Edge's PDF support will remain an annoyance for us that we have to mitigate instead of a feature that we can use.

It does become more & more concerning & worrisome as the clock continues to tick away... "Beware the ides of January".

Worrisome? why? Edge is making progress actively,

January's build is wrapped up, aim for next stable builds to see these features in

I also wish they would give set aside more priority

Why can't you just add support for other search providers on the New Tab page? Is it not as simple as it seems? You've got a great thing going here but forcing people to use Bing will drive people away from Edge. Please don't make the same mistake you did with the previous Edge.

Exactly, Google Chrome lets the NTP search engine to be Bing, Duckduckgo etc but Edge doesn't..

Good thing Bing is so good?

Not in this world

About a month back, I took a screenshot of Old Edge / New Edge / Chrome for comparison, and to my eyes, actual CHROME looks more like Old Edge than New Edge does. (Tell me I'm wrong... see below!)

Are yellow folders so hard to implement? The Favorites Bar just looks so drab and unfinished without the color. I'm flabbergasted that "Open all (52) favorites in a new window" is a feature that made the cut but yellow folders still haven't.

Unfortunately, the longer I use the new Edge, the more I'm getting used to it. The overall look does seem to be consistent with the theme of the Windows 10 task bar in dark mode, when you keep the task bar on the top like I do.

Lastly, I had this thought: Since the only people, more or less, who used old Edge frequently were us Microsoft fanboys and other insiders, and the idea is to have this new version gain widespread adoption, maybe emulating the look of the Old Edge really isn't the best idea in the world, ya know?

Edge.vs.Chrome.jpg

I would want to set my own custom image as the background for NTP, not Bing images, also favorites folder need to have custom colors so user can set any color they want instead of all being yellow...

Reader mode exists in Google chrome.

Honestly the address bar should be like Firefox, allowing user to change search engine on the fly without the need to go to settings page or set Bing as homepage which is something that is unpleasant for non-US residents because Microsoft products always have more features for the US residents than people in the rest of the world.

it's like that in a wide variety of the Microsoft products.

Consistency would require the look and feel of the browser to be consistent with the rest of the products too, as well as the built in features

That's a debatable topic. However what isn't debatable is that Microsoft has paid me nearly $200 in Amazon and Microsoft gift cards! I'm not ashamed, I can be bought.

Custom folder colors would be amazing; however I would settle for just parity with the previous browsers. Walk before we run, etc.

I'm really not a fan of the new tab pages whatsoever - I never understood the need for them. Why should it look or act differently than the main tab page? Now it's just one more thing I have to configure, or troubleshoot why it doesn't look right. But yeah, if they're going to give us a "Custom" NTP option, really make custom and make it completely configurable, including the option to replicate the home page. And what ever happened to "about:blank"?
