@DinosaurTim, from the UI in classic Edge, it's true that you had to select what to do (but only if you selected "Ask me what to do with each download," if that's not on, it just downloads directly to the Downloads directory)

clipboard_image_0.png

but the actual download operation still began in the background immediately, before you made a selection. You can test this by selecting a large file that will take several seconds or longer to download. Click the link, but don't answer the question of what do do with it for a few minutes. Then answer and you'll notice the file is already ready for you. Your response to the question just determines where it copies the file from appdata. It does not hold up the download.

One missing use case in regards to "run / open / save / save as" is to open/run an excel sheet provided by my bank which I just want to open without saving. Then I copy/paste the content to a different excel sheet, in which I defined several analysis functions processing the copy/paste content.

In the classical edge or different browsers this is possible.

2nd use case for me is to define path and/or filename for documents to be downloaded from the web.

@Colin -  My main focus is on reducing the number of clicks needed to accomplish things and streamlining workflow. Old IE/Edge always asked what to do with stuff before downloading, waiting for me to choose, and not starting the download until I do.

It's not that I hate the Open button; I hate the pre-download prompt with the Open button. The only reason that prompt existed was to choose between Save, Save As, and Open. Considering that Save and Open both download a file first, I think they are technically redundant. If you disagree, I'd honestly like to know what unique purpose the Open button serves for you? If it is just temporary file deletion, I think that can be better handled by downloading first, then having an "Open (and Delete)" button.

Regarding the pre-download Save As... button, that can be also replaced with a post-download Move Downloads... button on the download bar, which streamlines organization of multiple downloads at once.

Save and Open are NOT REDUNDANT. Save stores a file someplace. Run/open is for a single use, don't want to think about where to put the file and don't want to ever think about deleting it -- just open it and be done with it. Technically, of course both actually save the file someplace, so I understand what you mean when you say redundant, but from a UX perspective, they're as opposite as they are on the file menu in Word or Excel.

"Run/Open" is a HUGE TIME SAVINGS. Granted, the "Open" option that appears at the bottom of Chromium Edge helps compared with having to navigate to the saved file and open it, but it's still much slower.

A few examples:

  1. Voice messages in email -- I just want to play the attachment. I don't want to save it. I don't even want to look at the browser. Just play it. This is Open.
  2. Software updates -- Just want to run the update. I don't want the file after it runs. I don't want to have to go somewhere to clean it up. These can be large files, hundreds of MB, so forgetting to delete is a space risk. This is Run.
  3. Excel, Word, PDF documents that I may want to save, but I won't know until I've read it, so I want to open in the proper application, then I'll use that app's full File Dialog to save if I want to keep it, maybe after making some minor edits.

To do any of those without a Run/Open option, I would need to: Save it. Open it from the browser bar (an admitted improvement over the old much worse way of needing to navigate to the file), make a mental or physical note that I'll need to delete the file which I can't delete now, because the file is open. That last step is huge -- it absolutely destroys my flow. As soon as I have to pause to think about file management, my workflow and the UX is destroyed.

@DinosaurTim, from the UI in classic Edge, it's true that you had to select what to do (but only if you selected "Ask me what to do with each download," if that's not on, it just downloads directly to the Downloads directory)

but the actual download operation still began in the background immediately, before you made a selection. You can test this by selecting a large file that will take several seconds or longer to download. Click the link, but don't answer the question of what do do with it for a few minutes. Then answer and you'll notice the file is already ready for you. Your response to the question just determines where it copies the file from appdata. It does not hold up the download.

@Colin -Wow you are right, and I totally did not know that. I guess they already implemented what I have been wanting all along. Sneaky Ninjacats. Well, seeing as chromium Edge does not work like this right now, I would be totally cool if they just re-implement exactly how that pre-downloading plus Run/Open/Save banner works in classic Edge.

I still think a way to organize multiple downloads to a different folder could be a neat addition, but this solves all the primary concerns for me.

Regarding your other post about Open being for avoiding having to choose where to save stuff, isn't Downloads the place where all downloads go when they aren't organized? Plus, after saving with the Save button, you can still open it with one click from the downloads bar or banner. You don't need to open file explorer.

Regardless, @Elliot Kirk  @i-am-kent I rescind all my earlier objections to a Run/Open/Save banner assuming you make chromium Edge start downloading things to appdata before choosing an option exactly like classic Edge did and include the option to bypass the banner as in classic Edge.

Thanks to that addition (the new Open button following download), I agree that part is no longer much of an issue, but that was only half of what the Open/Run option avoids. The other half is deleting the file after you're done. It's not that it's hugely time consuming to delete a file, but it can take several seconds to find and delete it. More serious is that it's a whole separate thought process that is unrelated to the work being done. At least for me, it's really destructive to my workflow processes. I can't delete the file when I download it (because it's Open and therefore not deletable until I close it), which means I have to make some kind of note to or remember to go back and find and delete it later. I know that's not a big deal to everyone, but when I'm cranking through work and trying to get through dozens of tasks in a short time, this may prevent me from getting through some of the tasks I otherwise would have completed.

@RussTurrentine

One more thing to think about, when clicking on a html or htm file that someone has in a documents list on their website, the file just needs to open in the browser in another tab.  Why would I want to download that?  I just want to view it or print it.  Example would be that a company sends an email to a customer and places that in the document list for that customer as an html file.  I as the agent of the company have access to view what was delivered to the customer.  I don't want to save that locally.  I just want it to open and view.

I would like it to work exactly as it does in current Edge. If I'm going to download something I think I will need in the future, I will save it and leave it in my downloads folder. If it is something I think I will only need once, which is the overwhelming majority of what I download, I will just open/run the file and not have to spend time navigating to my downloads folder to delete it.

1. open Doc or PDF on FTP connection is needed. On FTP Pages Open an PDF Document directly is missing. actual save open folder and then open it by double click (funny, it will opened in the same Edge it was clicked before!)

2. Save File to Folder is very needed, it save a lot of time

I would like to see a menu that provide also "Save as" and "Open"

Just implement the current Edge behaviour. The direct download to the default location is a disaster if you are doing a lot of downloads, while the popup method allows me to organise the downloads before the download folder becomes a total mess.

One example: I am frequently downloading Visual C++ runtimes, which always have the same file name regardless of their version. With the crappy Chrome download model, I cannot do the downloads in parallel, because they all target the Downloads folder and get renamed to vcredist (1), vcredist (2), etc. which is totally useless.

You seem to have a really nice idea there. It preserves the speed of the current system while allowing the run/save as functionality with minimal user interaction.

I hadn't noticed the functionality was missing but this is definitely an improvement.

Hello @Elliot Kirk,

Since I've also suggested this option, I'm very glorified that You are considering this option to realise.

As far as I have read suggestions and critics, I've come to a conclusion - suggestion that could adapt to as much users as possible:

  • In situations listed below, Run would show up when file is executable (.exe, .msi, .reg?) but otherwise it should be Open (like it's now in oEdge)
  • In the Settings there would be an input of default directory (as it is now) and select field "Ask to do with downloadable file:" with 3 options:
    • Ask before downloading
    • Ask after downloading
    • Do not ask
  • Ask before downloading - It will act as it is in oEdge, but options should change to "Run/Open | Save | Save as" and a cross at the end - currently there's "Cancel" button, but it's pretty useless because of that cross at the end. Benefit of it could be -1 click when wanting to "Save As".
  • Ask after downloading - It will download file in default directory and then will ask what to do - "Run/Open | Open & Delete | Move".
    • Run/Open - action understandable I guess (same as it's now in cEdge - click and it will open);
    • Run/Open & Delete - Edge will move file to some temp-dir and after closing browser it will delete (or shutting down pc, idk how that works);
    • Move - will open dialog to select folder to move file;
    • Maybe there would be need for "Show in folder" instead of "Move" but that is debatable.
  • Do not ask - this will just download file. I believe there You can keep the current cEdge behaviour.

I'd also want kind of "old-style" download prompt as in oEdge when it pops up at bottom center but there would be a suggestion for UI from me:

  • In the situations below where "ask ... downloading" is selected I'd love that items would show up differently: the oldest status (waiting for action, downloading, downloaded) should move to end of right. For example in ask before situation - when user downloads a file in the bar it will show up first aligned in left, when user downloads another file it will append at right of the first item and both have statuses "Waiting for action". When the status changes, it moves at the end of list. AND when you click on the item representative DL prompt (pop-up) shows up with info - whether prompt with buttons, download progress etc. but not opening file [when DL is done].
  • When selected Ask before downloading - File would show up in current bottom DL bar with text "Waiting for action" under filename (see attached image) and the DL prompt shows up for the first item. If clicked to download multiple then users can switch between items in bottom bar.
  • When Ask after downloading is selected - File will show up in bottom bar and downloads. When finished shows prompt (if that pop-up isn't already active), changes item status to "Waiting for action" (see attached image) and moves it in bottom bar to the end of list. User can switch between items in bottom bar.

I truly believe this would be pretty challenging and different than other browsers provide but also quite cool. But developers should keep an eye on performance changes - if it's drastically increasing then we don't need this feature. :lol:

By the way - oEdge = old Edge; cEdge = Chromium Edge; DL = download.

@Elliot Kirk I think you understand the features needed.  Is it expected to have these features at release date?

Highlighted

@Elliot Kirk yes absolutely you are thinking in right direction..please provide these feature as fast as possible.

A save as option would be most useful to me to put files where I want them to go first time.

Run and Open are sometimes needed

Excellent! Function similar to the Edge HTML browser.

Like good old IE and Edge HTML did!

There is already an option to turn the "Save As" dialog on in the current Edge.

However I would really like to have an "Open" option so the file is places somewhere in the Temp Folder and will get deleted automatically at some point in the future.

@Elliot Kirk I would just like the behaviour fixed when saving PDF that are opened in EdgeDev. When I open an online PDF and click the save button it shows up in the Downloads Bar. This is excellent because then I can drag and drop it back into the browser to upload to online storage like OneDrive. However, when I open and save a PDF file that I've already downloaded (I do this to rename the file, and remain in Edge) it no longer shows up on the Downloads Bar, and I need to switch windows to drag and drop to the online storage site, or switch to the online storage site and click add file and then select from the popup dialog. I think this is the behaviour of the new PDF reader that's been implemented. Older versions of Edge had the behaviour where all PDFs saved, local or online, would show up in the Downloads Bar.

@Elliot Kirk Wanted to mention that I am not using the native PDF viewer and am using an external program and only have the option to download a PDF.  Would be great if it just opened in the default PDF program and then you could save the PDF if needed from the program.

Last night / this morning, I discovered something annoying about Edge Insider's download manager. Most people probably don't know this, but you can drag and drop files from the download bar directly into file explorer and other programs! I had maybe around 30 PDF files that I needed to download and organize, so I opened up file explorer, turned off "choose destination for every file" in Edge, and began downloading about 4 files at a time, navigating to where I wanted to put them in File Explorer, and dropping them into place. This was great for moving a ton of files to many different destinations... or so I thought.

It turns out that dragging and dropping a file from Edge's download bar doesn't work like drag and drop within File Explorer. Edge duplicates the file instead of moving it. This means, by the time I was done, I had two copies of every file. My default download location is my desktop, but I didn't know what was happening because I had Edge and File Explorer covering it up. Cut to this morning, and I discover that I have 30 so files nicely tucked away in their folders, and also randomly strewn across my desktop.

I can understand why it was designed like this: if you're dragging a downloaded file into an existing tab, to say, upload it to social media, you would want the file to also remain at its source. If you're dragging and dropping a file into an application like Photoshop the file shouldn't move from its original location. However, Windows 10's default drag and drop behavior already accounts for this. When dragging into a folder, Windows 10 transfers the file instead of creating a copy. When dragging a file into an application, Windows 10 keeps the original file in its source location. Edge's Download bar should have the same behavior, if at all possible.

I think the most important thing to keep in mind is that in the end you don't have to choose one or the other. Just enable us to choose. Give us options.

From a design perspective, I would say keep it simple. Have an Open and a Save button.

If people want more options, allow them to enable them in the settings.

Highlighted

Really need these options, (and corrected the bug that once out of 2, when I choose the desktop as a destination, the file does not appear, forced to actualize or F5)

And to have a small download window (like IE) to be able to close the browser and still have a visual on the download (without it being an entire browser window)

@Elliot Kirk

For my perspective there is no further need for discussion. Please just implement. Thanks

Highlighted

@Elliot Kirk

When downloading the previous Edge shows time in hours and minutes remaining from the start to the end. New Edge only shows hours left first, then minutes only when it is ending.
Example a 2 hour 30 minute download will just be shown as 2 hours left, 1 hour left then mins till completed. Please show full actual downloading time like EdgeHTML, it would be great. Thank's !

Highlighted

@DinosaurTim What you think about my proposal on the first page? It was about a "save/move to... " to recent locations. Could you also consider the total amount of clicks needed to download three photos into three different folders? The count is similar but the navigation clicks go **bleep** high.

Highlighted

@Elliot Kirk

Could you please wrap this topic up and post a conclusion and your plans about it? it's been more than 1 month now

Highlighted

@WolfIcefangCool discovery. Maybe the chromium people didn't want to bother tracking a moved file so it could be opened from the browser, or maybe they don't care about leaving duplicate files littered around a PC. Either way, this should be changed to a move functionality like you said.

This could be an opportunity to add a checkbox-style select button for each download, so multiple downloads can be moved via drag-and-drop.

Highlighted

For me it's always the right direction

Above all to be able to "open" a file, attachment in an email, etc .... without having to save it on the PC

And if it would be possible to have a smaller download window (like Internet Explorer for example) with download information, file name, speed, remaining time, etc ....
It would allow to close Edge but still have this little download window in visual (in place of the current web page)

In fact, I find the IE system very successful :smile:
But this browser has had several years of "development"

Highlighted
I think it needs a big change in the browser and how it handles everything. right now when browser is closed, everything is closed with it too, even the feedback system.
I once requested before to put the feedback and problem recording system on a different process so that when the browser crashes or hangs, problem recording stays responsive to record what happened, but the developers said it's so hard to implement and they can't currently do that.
Highlighted

@HotCakeX

It would just be necessary that the window "Feedback", "Download", etc ... be considered as an Edge window "apart" (as if a new Edge window was open) and there will be no problem

This is the case with IE, it should not be complicated to set up

Highlighted
True, i hope they invest the time to do that, using Chromium should create more opportunities, not restrictions
Highlighted

@Elliot Kirk

Having an option to open, save and run downloads is simple and very useful. Because having programs download right away is not good, for example some websites automatically try to download files. But if there is an option for what to do with the download, the user can then stop it. And if many files are downloaded by the user, and the user wants to save them in different places. It is not ideal to go to setting and change the save location. By having those options of open, save and run the user doesn't even have to save the item to their computer.

Highlighted

@josh_bodnerSorry mate but I do not like this idea. Some "low priority" files are opened on the fly, others are saved in the downloads folder. Clearing the browsing data will also delete more important files. Using Temporary directory is the best solution. Some old things just don't need much of a changing. Those design choices are really good. Even some browsers that are chrome based offer similar functionality, for example Vivaldi. This is rare and very useful feature for power users.

Highlighted

I think an open / run /save would be good for documents and applications. I tend to save a lot application installers to a different part of my hard drive and would love to have an option in the new edge to do so. @Elliot Kirk

@Rich Lusk

Me too. I like to have option to run app without downloading it, and only if I confirm by run button, not automatically. Downloading automatically files can infect your computer.

I like that in classic Edge download bar is related to page offering file to download.

For me, the main use of this dialogue is to tell how large the file I'm downloading is going to be. Very important especially on capped connections.

Highlighted
Is there no way to see, when highlighting a link with the mouse, whether or not it will prompt a download?
If there is, one fairly easy solution (easy to conceptualise at least) is to right click on such a link and have a menu: 'open', 'save', or 'save and open'.

In general, I think that pages downloaded from the same webpage should be treated the same. Perhaps a default could be a prompt as in the old Edge and, if the page isn't explicitly opened, the rest of the downloads are also downloaded but not opened (i.e. treated the same as the first download from that webpage).

I think the user should also have the option to change the default, whether "open", "save", "both" or "treat as was the first download from that webpage"

@Elliot Kirk

Elliot, sounds like 4 comes the closest to covering things or summing it up nicely.  Certain instances will beget different actions.  Point is, YES, sometimes want to run or open something without saving.  And, if saving, always, want choice between DLs going to the DL folder or being directed elsewhere.  These (traditional) options, really, should (continue to) exist.

@Elliot Kirk It is important for us that this run / open / save / save as implementation works together with the "Always open PDF files externally" group policy.

We have 800+ employees who are required to open PDF files from our internal document management solution in Adobe Reader, as the build-in PDF viewer in Edge does not display the documents correctly (As the documents have JavaScript in them)

But the way the "Always open PDF files externally" group policy works today is not very user friendly, as they have to first download the PDF to the Download folder and then open it.

We wish Edge could open PDF files using Adobe Reader just like Internet Explorer could, where when you click a PDF it just automatically opens the file from a temp folder, where the user doesn't see that the file is downloaded and doesn't have to cleanup their download folder.

Highlighted

@MissyQ Any progress with this feature? What is not yet understandable so we could discuss further?

@KristersA

Discuss further... you're kidding, to be sure.  This issue is so clear-cut, an obvious no-brainer; doesn't need heaps of talk that hasn't, already, been well stated.  Nobody wants to work or function without these standard, expected & required options for downloading (or not).

Cheers,
Drew

Yeah I also think it's time after all this month to wrap this topic up and post a conclusion of the feedbacks

@Elliot Kirk I think you guys nailed identifying the main customer needs. Here's another mockup showing a way it could be done, I think this meets all the needs you presented along with some additional features discussed by others above.

Summary

To minimize clicks like in the current flow (#3), by default files are saved to the Download folder. It preserves the option "Ask where to save each file before downloading", which some users want. If users want to change an individual download's filename or location (#2), they click "Move". If users want a particular file saved in a temporary fashion (#1), they can enable the "Open once" button option and use that button (it's disabled by default to avoid users like this). And since all of these are readily accessible on a file-by-file basis, it also meets (#4).

More useful downloads interface, mockup summary 1More useful downloads interface, mockup summary 1

Additional Explanation of Buttons and Options

There isn't space to have all these extra buttons on every download. Therefore, they only appear on one file at a time -- either the most recent download, or if a user has already clicked one of the buttons on the most recent file then it shows the buttons on the second-most-recent file, and so on. For files which are collapsed and showing just the filename and filesize/progress bar, the extra functions can all still be accessed under the "..." menu.

The wording could dynamically change by having the "Move" button be "Save As" while a download is still ongoing, and by having the "Open once" button be "Run once" if a file happens to be an executable (.exe, .msi, etc.). I'd also keep the current behavior where clicking anywhere in the file's download section causes it to open (or to queue up to open if the download hasn't finished yet), but doesn't cause the file to be automatically recycled.

The "Open once" button option is disabled by default to help prevent issues where users "Open" a file to make edits to it, and then save and close the file without ever ... This is also the reasoning behind the option "Recycle all files in Downloads when closing browser", rather than "Delete all files in Downloads in when closing browser"; this option was suggested by @josh_bodner, though the recycling behavior is my idea.

The "Move All" button proposed by @WolfIcefang and @DinosaurTim lets people quickly click a bunch of pictures to download (for example), then click "Move All" to put all items in the downloads bar into a particular folder.

The Ctrl+Click and Ctrl+Shift+Click keyboard shortcut option is adapted from @Wessso's suggestion above.

Per @HotCakeX's suggestion above, an option exists to manage choosing how particular filetype downloads are automatically handled like in Firefox. For each type of file, a user can choose to have it automatically "Preview", "Always Ask", "Save", or "Open With...". Chrome can apparently already do this for PDF files, but no other filetypes that I can find.

Per @LuKePicci's suggestion, there's a dropdown menu by the "Move" button which is populated with the most recent folder locations.

Per @CyanCoding's suggestion here from Apr 2019, the right-click menu gets a "Delete" button and the Cancel becomes "Cancel / Restart" like other browsers which let you attempt to restart a canceled download (I know at least Vivaldi does, I assume other browsers do as well). A "Pause"/"Resume" function would be cool too, but I'm not sure how to put that in the interface elegantly.

Miscellaneous Comments

@DinosaurTim argues above that

I think this "Open" button actually needs to die. The reason? Storage Sense. Windows 10's Storage Sense can automatically clean up the Downloads folder of old things we only needed temporarily (like program installers or things to print). The "Open" button of IE caused unneeded confusion, because people wanted to save AND open, and making them choose just confused them.

I disagree because the new Edge is cross-platform. Just because a user happens to be on MacOS or Linux doesn't mean they should lose the ability to open files in a temporary fashion. You also mention the "Open" button causing unneeded confusion; I agree this is bad, and is another reason my mockup uses an "Open once" button which is disabled by default for users who don't understand the difference.

@RussTurrentine says above that

...When clicking on a html or htm file that someone has in a documents list on their website, the file just needs to open in the browser in another tab. Why would I want to download that? I just want to view it or print it..

I disagree because that behavior you're describing is defined by MIME types on a website, see this post for more information. Edge could "guess" what the right behavior is, but that breaks web standards which I think causes more trouble than it's worth. For a vivid example of how the website not the browser controls what happens to files, check out these two links. Both are just hyperlinks to a PDF file, but the websites they're hosted on are configured with different behavior:

I like this. It addresses a bunch of issues I don't care about, so MAYBE it's a more complex solution than needed (or maybe that's just because I don't personally care about all of these facets), but there is nothing in it I disagree with. I think this hits every identified need and even address the core concerns of people who don't really want to restore the Open / Run capability.

I hadn't thought about it before, but I do like the clarity of "Open once". I would suggest maintaining the browser intelligence on using the term "Open" for documents and "Run" for executables, but I don't feel strongly on that.
Highlighted
That's good, do it as is and go on with new issues.
Highlighted
The best solutions are always the simplest ones.

add the Same download options that Edge legacy had to the new Edge.

Yeah.. At this moment when they are planning to replace original edge - at least the things which was in old would be good enough.
