optional suggestion: new menu bar app for mac

Iron Contributor

i wish i could launch one of my edge profile (no matter from which edge) directly in the menu bar. so you create a profile launcher.app and then i can search a profile installed on my 4 browser, without need to launch a browser.

at the moment we can do similar things once the browser is launched using the dock icon or using the sync icon or using the menu bar option inside edge. but there is still the limit that we can do it for one browser. we cannot search profiles installed on all 4 browser.

plus every time you launch the browser, you open the last used profile. so we first need to close and then switch (which requires time). profile switching is slower in edge compared to google.

now with this new app you would simply launch a profile inside an edge app, without launching the previous profile.

On Windows you can create shortcuts to different profiles and pin them to desktop, start menu and taskbar, can't you do that on mac?

i don't see such options, but at the end my desktop or dock are already full of alias or application or folder or other things.

Alias for profile is ok if you own 2-5 edge profiles (so it wouldn't take a lot of space on the desktop too). is like using alias for websites, is not a good solution if you visit a lot of websites.

We talked about Alias in the other post and what they are for.
you can create different profiles on Edge but don't need to connect them to online accounts and sync passwords, favorites etc.

Outlook aliases are to protect your identify from 3rd party sites by keeping you anonymous, right? if you could sync data and start adding personal information to it, it wouldn't be anonymous anymore, it would be just like your main Microsoft account. so this is the mentality behind Outlook aliases.

for shady websites that you don't trust, you can always use temporary Emails from sites like this:
https://temp-mail.org/en/

Also, another example. Firefox has a feature called container. it works just like Edge profiles (as long as they are offline profiles). you can't connect Firefox containers to an online profile and they don't support sync. that is to protect your identity.

@HotCakeX  you can create shortcuts to different profiles and pin them to desktop = alias (which is not related to alias for outlook, but more like alias for finder)

@HotCakeX

this is just the add new edge profile panel.

after that we see the list inside the menu bar https://imgur.com/a/SIBcPvb or lateral account menu https://imgur.com/a/7tqeh5s

i thought that what you wrote before looks more like

https://apps.apple.com/de/app/web-apps/id476000427?mt=12

or https://macmost.com/using-mac-aliases.html with an alias to launch directly the profile related file stored in /library/applicationsupport/edge... (so edge would simply create a type of file, which works like an alias for finder, so that we can launch the profile directly from the desktop).

PS: about launching profile from the dock i already wrote before, which seems to be similar to what you said about taskbar (or at least i think). in such way you are limited to launch only the edge related profiles (= you cannot launch edge canary profile using beta) and edge.app should be open.

Also, another example. Firefox has a feature called container. it works just like Edge profiles (as long as they are offline profiles). you can't connect Firefox containers to an online profile and they don't support sync. that is to protect your identity.

this is not related to the suggestion, but i still write about it.

since i use all 6 firefox browser with at least 10+ container accounts pro browser, i can tell you that all data is sync without problems. firefox main problem is simply extension sync problem.

with firefox you simply sync such data with the main account (example password, visited, etc) or the specific account for containers. this mean if i use 30 container accounts, i sync with just 1 not 30. obviously bookmarks and extensions are the same for all 30 container accounts.

containers on firefox works like https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/sessionbox-free-multi-log/megbklhjamjbcafknkgmokldgolkdfig (but better). such suggestion is already submitted here https://bugs.chromium.org/u/3178650258/hotlists/ticinostheticssuggestion?can=1 and here https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/discussions/list-of-suggestion/td-p/1741676

PS: probably i will resubmit to chromium this in the next months again, due to the batch won't fix  that i get from the same dev after sending 60 suggestions at once last time. probably there will be better discussion if i send such suggestions separately

Ah so shortcuts in Windows is called alias in Mac.
and finder is called search in Windows.

Yes, dock in Mac is one part of Taskbar in Windows, where you can put shortcuts/alias for quick launch.
