Install site as an app in crashing under 85.0.535.0 Canary build

Brass Contributor

Good morning

Issue is in the subject field above. Anyone else seeing this?

Already reported on the feedback hub.

Thanks

@pedroaboim I have 85.0.537.0 and I am not seeing this, but I'm not sure if it's something we fixed or not. I suspect this might be due to a feature being enabled by accident, and perhaps it's disabled for me. Since you reported via the feedback hub, I will probably be able to tell, but please do try 537 and let me know. Also, if you do still see it, can you tell me what flags you have enabled in edge://flags and also what URL you are trying to install?

Thanks!

-John

Thanks so much for your reply. Here are the flags I have enabled:

Desktop PWAs local updating

Desktop PWAs app icon shortcuts menu

Desktop PWAs run on OS login

Parallel downloading

Allow installation of external store themes

Enable Fullscreen Dropdown

Global Media Controls for Cast

Global Media Controls Picture-in-Picture

Turn off caching of streaming media to disk

Trying to install:

Facebook as an app, for instance.. (https://www.facebook.com) - nothing happens after naming the app

Google Contact as an app, for instance.. (https://contacts.google.com) - nothing happens after naming the app

Twitter, for instance, is ok (https://twitter.com/home)

Thank you so much in advance.

Thank you so much for your reply.

Here are the flags I have enabled:

Smooth Scrolling

Desktop PWAs local updating

Desktop PWAs app icon shortcuts menu

Desktop PWAs run on OS login
Parallel downloading
Allow installation of external store themes

Enable Fullscreen Dropdown

Global Media Controls for Cast

Global Media Controls Picture-in-Picture

Turn off caching of streaming media to disk.

I can't install Facebook, or Google Contacts, for instance (https://www.facebook.com/) (https://contacts.google.com/).

And there are many other sites I can't install (home banking for instance). I already reset the browser,  reinstalled it, etc,, but nothing changes. I can set the app shortcut names, but nothing happens.

I can install Twitter or Netflix, though...

Strange.

Thank you in advance and yes!, it still happens to me in 538.0.

PS. When will global media controls be back?

@pedroaboim I made sure to enable the same flags as you and then tried to install facebook.com and it worked for me, which is too bad. I was hoping that I would see it and be able to better understand what is going on. I'm going to keep digging here, but please do submit the crashing reports.

Thanks @johnjansen

Although the problem is not as much as crashing, it's the site not installing as an app - after I set the name of the shortcut and click install, nothing happens, the page just remains opened, it doesn't reload in it's own window with the color customized title bar, and it doesn't show on the manage apps settings window! :(

@johnjansen

I think I might be on to something..

In my surface pro 6, I could install the apps just fine.

In my desktop, I can't (same flags enabled). After snooping around, I noticed that although nothing shows under "manage apps", the culprit sites/apps show as installed on my control panel, but I can't find a way to uninstall them.

What do you advise?

Thanks

@johnjansen

Problem solved!

Using IoBit Uninstaller, I uninstalled Edge Canary and Edge Stable (which had no sites installed as apps), and also every site installed as app left behind on the Control Panel and every entry left behind in the Registry. Restarted the computer, and reinstalled every site I wanted as an app.

Thank you for all your help.

:)

Still, are global media controls coming back ;)

@pedroaboim We're glad to hear that it's working again, that's an interesting scenario. Please let us know if you see anything similar happen again.

And as always, thanks for digging into this, @johnjansen!
