Dolby Digital on Edge Chromium

Copper Contributor

Hi!

My first post so I hope I do it right.

I watch much movies on my HTPC (Viaplay). And last time I tried Edge beta it did not support Dolby Digital.

Will Edge (Chromium) have Dolby Digital support in the future?

Also I don't know how it will work when Edge (Chromium) is ready/stable. Will Windows update force old Edge to be updated to Edge (Chromium), or Will old Edge remain?

Hi @Eazy1

Welcome to the forum!

here is the official document explaining how the transition from the old to the new Edge will happen

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/DeployEdge/microsoft-edge-sysupdate-windows-updates

How to access the old version of Microsoft Edge after installing the new version

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/DeployEdge/microsoft-edge-sysupdate-access-old-edge

as far as I can tell and my tests shows me, Edge insider Canary Version 80.0.344.0 (Official build) canary (64-bit) Supports it.

you can test it in this website, I'm getting audio in all the scenes on both Edge classic and Edge insider canary (except for HLS on Edge canary), though when I test it on Google chrome canary, there is no audio.

Hi and thanx for your response!

I just now tried the latest canary (same version you mentioned) but I get no Dolby Digital. This is on viaplay.se I don't know if it is Viaplay that does something wrong or if it is Edge chromium. I do have Dolby Digital on Edge classic.

I have no Dolby Digital on Edge chromium trying this, but I do on Edge classic:

Do I need to install something to get it to work?

No you don't have to install anything,
in this website http://audioexperience.dolby.com/ you can't get any audio on Edge canary, in none of the devices?
that's strange because I have.
which Windows 10 version are you using?

@HotCakeX

I get audio, but not Dolby Digital. Amplifier says prologic II.

When you get audio that should mean your browser supports dolby digital. that's the whole purpose of that test website.
what amplifier ?

@HotCakeX

Its a Denon AVR-X1000. But I do got Dolby Digital with Edge classic on that site but not with Edge canary. I guess Edge canary sends out stereo only to my receiver. Only a guess...

I wish I had some content that i could test it as well. i know dolby digital uses AC3 and there are AC3 test stuff like this
https://archive.org/download/5.1SurroundSoundTestFilesVariousFormatsAACAC3MP4DTSWAV/surroundTest%20-...
but Edge insider and classic both download the file instead of playing it so

by the way i'm getting these results in Version 80.0.351.0 (Official build) canary (64-bit)

can't figure out whether it supports it or not in the end, the results are mixed

@HotCakeX

Thanks for the useful links. Hopefully clarity will be provided at some point.

Yes hopefully..

Same problem here,  no surrundchannels provided either analog och through digital out in the new Edge Chromium         @Eazy1

To reproduce

Take a computer with at least 3 analog connectors.

Use mainspeakers och headphone on regular out.

Connect extra headphones on surround and configure speaker settings to ex 5.1 and play testtones in settingmenu.

Now playback these official tracks from Dolby digital. ex Leaf

https://www.dolby.com/us/en/guide/dolby-atmos-trailers.html

You will have surround in old Edge (since 2015) but not in the new Edge chromium.

If you download the file ( 3dots in right low corner) and playback in mediaplayer it works great.

I cant find any other browser that can output surround, so the old Edge was one of a kind.

I've managed to patch realtek drivers and add a key in regedit.

Alan finote has made a nice installation program for this.

Now I can choose so everything is packed in 5.1 container through spdif.
This makes all test material work through Edge Chromium work. AAc, MP4, the amp switches between DTS or DD auto when playing testfiles.
Although even internet radio gets a 5.1 container.

But viaplay, and I guess HBO doesnt work. Its 2 channel audio presented in a 5.1 DD container.

In somehow its like Edge Chromium doesnt force DD o DTS directly to spdif/digital out on soundcard. Its like it doesnt take full command of the audiodrive.
And boy do we have a lot of realtek chipsets :)

@HotCakeX  I am able to get proper 5.1 channel sound from all my audio channels only on the link you shared, but I don't get it on any video streaming site like Youtube, Netflix or Amazon Prime. Any idea as to why this is happening?

For what I know Youtube doesnt support 5.1 channel audio. (Although there are many testfiles there.)
Netflix App for windows has its own code and works in 5.1. And 7.1 (Not through browsers)

@HotCakeX My Edge says it's supported. Running version 81.0.416.53 64-bit.

That's interesting, seeing the same thing on Version 84.0.488.0 (Official build) canary (64-bit)
Yes, thats correct the Canary x84.0.488.0 has excellent support and can playback dolby atmos or any dolby format and make it great in 2 channel stereo.

There is no way it output it in 5.1 either analog or spdif. Very sad.

Any other browser can output dolby digital or dolby atmos in 5.1 channels?
