Dev channel update to 86.0.622.3 is live

Microsoft

Hello Insiders!  Today we’re releasing build 86.0.622.3 to the Dev channel.  This is the final build for major version 86, give or take a few small patches, so this is what will be moving to Beta soon.  Since we also released major version 85 to Stable recently, we also updated our security baselines.  You can read more here:  https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/microsoft-security-baselines/security-baseline-for-microsoft-....  We also highlighted some improvements we made in the PDF highlighter tool:  https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/articles/highlighter-tool-for-pdfs-now-with-pen-support/m-p/1....  As for all the changes that are important enough to talk about:

Added features:

  • Added the ability to delete a downloaded file from the file’s entry’s … menu on the Downloads shelf.
  • Added an option to show or hide the Favorites bar from the Favorites management page.
  • Added more alerts when Password Monitor detects a compromised password.
  • Added a management policy for Internet Explorer Integration Testing Allowed.  Note that this policy only applies if IE mode is also enabled, and that updates to administrative templates and documentation will come at a later date.
  • Added a management policy to Enable Edge Spotlight Experiences and Recommendations.  Note that updates to administrative templates and documentation will come at a later date.
  • Enabled support for Default Sensors Setting, Sensors Allowed For Urls, and Sensors Blocked For Urls management policies from Chromium.
  • Enabled a management policy for Insecure Form Warnings Enabled from Chromium.

Improved reliability:

  • Fixed an issue where closing a window when some popups are open sometimes crashes the browser.
  • Fixed a crash when using Read Aloud.
  • Fixed an issue where opening the browser by clicking a link from another application sometimes causes the browser to immediately close again.
  • Fixed an issue where opening Edge by clicking on a link from another application sometimes causes pages not to load and shows error RESULT_CODE_MISSING_DATA.
  • Fixed an issue where Edge sometimes sees a very fast increase in memory usage.
  • Fixed an issue where selecting a OneNote notebook to export a Collection to sometimes fails.
  • Fixed an issue where websites sometimes can’t be installed as apps.
  • Fixed an issue where users signed into the browser with work or school accounts sometimes fail to log into work or school websites.
  • Fixed an issue where clicking on a file’s entry on the Downloads shelf to open it sometimes fails.
  • Fixed an issue where attempting to uninstall Edge Insider channels sometimes fails with a message to close any open Edge windows even though none are open.

Changed behavior:

  • Improved scrolling behavior in PDFs.
  • Improved the number of websites that can use the browser profile’s saved credentials to automatically log in while in IE mode.
  • Fixed an issue where some devices cause webpages to scroll incredibly fast.
  • Fixed an issue where windows sometimes flicker or rapidly switch between two visual states.
  • Fixed an issue where Sidebar search is sometimes not available in PDFs.
  • Fixed an issue on Mac where the Passwords management page in Settings sometimes is blank.
  • Fixed an issue where the Password Protection Login URLs and Password Protection Change Password URL management policies don’t work on Mac.
  • Fixed an issue where some webpages incorrectly detect or display a message that they don’t work in Edge.
  • Fixed an issue where suggestions that appear for URLs to visit when the typed URL doesn’t exist weren’t working.
  • Fixed an issue where signing into the browser sometimes results in the profile picture not appearing.
  • Fixed an issue where copying a page’s address from the address bar sometimes fails or puts the wrong data on the clipboard.
  • Fixed an issue where the window control buttons sometimes overlap some of the tabs in Shy UI if many tabs are open.
  • Fixed an issue where tabs can’t be selected in Shy UI.
  • Fixed an issue where the new tab page is sometimes blocked by Family Safety settings.
  • Fixed an issue where the address bar popup to allow third-party cookies sometimes doesn’t contain an option to do it right there and only contains a link to Settings.
  • Fixed an issue where the caret browsing confirmation popup contains two identical checkboxes.

Known issues:

  • Mac users running the OS 11 preview (Big Sur) may have issues with all versions of Edge either crashing or not launching to begin with.  We’ve identified the issue and are working to get it resolved before Big Sur is officially released.
  • Users of certain ad blocking extensions may experience playback errors on Youtube.  As a workaround, temporarily disabling the extension should allow playback to proceed.  See https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/articles/known-issue-adblock-causing-errors-on-youtube/m-p/14... for more details.
  • Some users are still running into an issue where all tabs and extensions immediately crash with a STATUS_INVALID_IMAGE_HASH error.  The most common cause of this error is outdated security or antivirus software from vendors like Symantec, and in those cases, updating that software will fix it.
  • Users of the Kaspersky Internet Suite who have the associated extension installed may sometimes see webpages like Gmail fail to load.  This failure is due to the main Kaspersky software being out of date, and is thus fixed by making sure the latest version is installed.
  • Some users are seeing favorites get duplicated after we made some previous fixes in that area. The most common way this is triggered is by installing the Stable channel of Edge and then signing into it with an account that has already signed into Edge before.  Fixing this should be easier now that the deduplicator tool is available.  However, we’ve also seen duplication happen when running the deduplicator on multiple machines before either machine has a chance to fully sync its changes, so while we wait for some of the fixes we’ve made to come to Stable, make sure to leave plenty of time in between runs of the deduplicator.
  • After an initial fix for it recently, some users are still experiencing Edge windows becoming all black.  Opening the Browser Task Manager (keyboard shortcut is shift + esc) and killing the GPU process usually fixes it.  Note that this only appears to affect users with certain hardware and is most easily triggered by resizing an Edge window.  For users with discrete GPUs, updating graphics drivers may help.
  • Some users are seeing “wobbling” behavior when scrolling using trackpad gestures or touchscreens, where scrolling in one dimension also causes the page to subtly scroll back and forth in the other.  Note that this only affects certain websites and seems to be worse on certain devices.  This is most likely related to our ongoing work to bring scrolling back to parity with Edge Legacy’s behavior, so if this behavior is undesirable, you can temporarily turn it off by disabling the edge://flags/#edge-experimental-scrolling flag.
  • There are some issues where users with multiple audio output devices sometimes don’t get any sound from Edge. In one case, Edge becomes muted in the Windows Volume Mixer and unmuting it fixes it.  In another, restarting the browser fixes it.

Thanks to everybody who’s been reporting bugs and filing suggestions for what you’d like the browser to look like.  Your feedback has been invaluable!

Any update on when to expect History Sync?

Vertical tabs?  Soon?

@josh_bodner

What about "smart copy" feature? When to expect it will appear in dev/canary builds?

@asplode Already rolling out.

Does this require enabling a flag to show up/work??

Vertical tabs are not that useful to me if the space at the top remains the same. Just pointing out.

@ankitbko

@M_S Agreed. The vertical space needs to shrink. The title bar itself needs to go away to make any difference in vertical height. @josh_bodner any plan for this?

devtool ... customize and control devtool not work.@josh_bodner

I am having problems with zooming with touchpad . The whole page refreshes (turns white for some time and then everything goes back) after I zoom in or scroll. I had to uninstall Edge Dev and use Edge Beta for now.

@M_S If the title bar goes away, there will be no place for the minimize, maximize, or close buttons.  I had the same thoughts until I really thought it through.  Where should those buttons go?  I also wish you could resize the vertical tabs.  Just the icon is not enough to know which tab you need if several tabs use the same icon, but the full tab is too much.

@Russ_Turrentine  This would be a perfect use for reveal tabs: both hovering over individual tabs, and a button to reveal all. You know, the feature that's been discussed for close to a year, with absolutely no response from Microsoft and @josh_bodner (sigh).

@ankitbko That unused space is now just a standard window title bar like most other applications have (the ones that don't have a standard title bar still have one, they just put extra stuff in it like Office does, or for that matter like we do when the tabs aren't in vertical mode).  That's actually much harder to get rid of than you'd think, since as somebody else pointed out, the window control buttons have to go somewhere.  And since title bars are very standard UI pieces in any operating system, it would be a lot of custom work to get rid of it.  You also would need some way to drag the window around, and by that point you're adding more buttons and multiple areas of dead space to the address bar area (only a single dead space won't work if that space is the part of the window that's off screen; Edge Legacy suffered from that problem, and we got TONS of feedback about people who couldn't move their window because the draggable space wasn't visible), making it even more cluttered and hard to use.  And an address bar that's too skinny to see the full website is also a security concern, at least compared to its current design.  I'm not saying we'd never do it, but because of all those things working against us, it would be pretty low on our priority list unless we got overwhelming feedback about it.

@simba520 have you filed feedback about it yet?  That'll make sure it gets a bug into our database.

@ZZYSonny That sounds kind of like the page is crashing.  If you reinstall Dev and it happens again, you might want to check edge://crashes to see if any are listed.

@Russ_Turrentine if you haven't yet, make sure you file feedback about being able to resize the vertical tabs, that way we'll be able to count how many people are asking for it!

Looks like Discord is working as well again :)

@josh_bodner

There is nothing listed in edge://crashes and it is happening on almost every website. I have used Bing as an example in the attached gif.

My Spec

Win10 20H2 19041.450

AMD R7 4800HS Edge is running on my iGPU

@ZZYSonny Oh okay, the flashing is a lot faster than I was thinking.  We've been tracking some other issues recently around webpages flashing in some way, so I'll let the engineers know about this particular cause.

@josh_bodner I ask the Microsoft Edge developers to pay close attention to this issue: "The selection of the context menu items disappears"

This problem is also present in Edge :sad: The problem is that this behavior is not native to the Windows operating system. In addition, it is very annoying if you are left-handed.
