Yes, a patch to the OS is necessary. For Windows XP SP2, the patch is http://support.microsoft.com/kb/931836 - if you've applied this already, you'll see it in add/remove programs if you have the "show updates" box checked. If you haven't got this yet, you can find it at http://update.microsoft.com
