Third Party Apps 9-15-2016 3-49-46 PM.jpgYammer network administrators have the ability to turn on or turn off their members' ability to access third party applications. This choice is found in the Configuration admin menu as shown (Sept 2016).

Bear in mind that if you disable (by unchecking) third party applications, this choice does not seem to interfere with use of Yammer mobile applications or all your available third party solutions for network analytics.*

If you're considering whether to turn this setting on or off, here are a few points to think about.

First, your choice here is all or nothing. Microsoft does not enable app by app control.

Second, Microsoft does not take responsibility for standardizing or certifying the privacy policies or other major contract provisions of the apps offered via this channel. The attitude seems to be, let the buyer beware!

If you review the terms of a sample of these third party offerings, you will likely find that many are acceptable but that others require unacceptable access to your data.

Third, as an admin you won't get any notices about what third party offerings your people turn on, if you enable this functionality. It's up to you to monitor your members' enablement of third party applications on a recurring and proactive basis.

*Note: this was written in advance of the December 1, 2016 termination of single sign on solutions for Yammer network access. As Yammer moves to Office 365 provisioning, at companies like mine, we are working to roll out solutions like Intune to make sure that our mobile users retain network access. I will circle back to this thread to update as appropriate if some of our learnings along the way involve the third party applications setting.

Because of your 3rd point that "some require unacceptable access to your data" it's been switched off everywhere I've worked, which is a real shame as there looks like there are useful apps out there

@Deleted, if you disable third-party apps, does it include the ability to tag posts with topics?  When I look at "My Apps" in the App Directory, it lists "Topics" as one of those apps, which surprised me.  Any idea? Thanks!

Great post @Deleted!

I just recently discovered the other day that this 3rd party application setting within Yammer also affects Yammer functionality within Flow. If you have 3rd party applications disabled within Yammer, Flow will not allow connections into Yammer at all. It basically renders Yammer dead as a part of any Flow.

I don't understand why this functions this way since Yammer and Flow definitely do not have a 3rd party application relationship to each other. I'm fairly certain they are both created by Microsoft and a part of Office 365. :)

Maybe you could help me tag some people into this thread to figure out why this is behaving this way?

edit: Did a little internet sleuthing and found the right people, I think. Tagging them in - @Merwan Hade @Pratap Ladhani

Thanks!
