This has appeared in Outlook 2016 on the Insider Fast channel, an option to save local attachments straight to OneDrive and Office 365 Groups:
The OneDrive for Business option doesn't seem to work but the others appear to. A really nice addition that's been on the roadmap for a while. Great to see this when it's fully rolled out.

This is huge for my organization! I'm constantly getting this question from people looking for "reasons" to not use SharePoint/OneDrive. It'll be great to finally have an answer where I don't get an eye roll.

I have this too!
Same result though. Saving to ODfB just says save failed, but hopefully its coming soon!

Saving to OneDrive for Business now works for me. The file is uploaded to the root of my OneDrive folder, also I didn't mention before the feature is accessible from the toolbar as well

I've just realized that this "save to onedrive" is a screenshot from the mail composing window, where you can upload the attachment to onedrive before you send the mail.
Does save to onedrive also work for attachments received in the inbox?

Yes, that's right, you can save attachments received in your inbox. Anywhere, an attachment appears you can upload to OneDrive or Office 365 Groups.
As you already said, when composing an email, you can add a local attachment, then upload to OneDrive using this option and in one step it becomes a modern attachment, very slick!

Quick update , this feature is now on the Current Channel and First Release for Deferred Channel 1609. This will then be available in the next Deferred Channel as things stand scheduled for February 14, 2017.

Yep, have been using it for a few days now.
I just wish Microsoft would have used the same UI/functionality as the Attach File UI/Functionality, since the Save to OneDrive/Group Files UI just saves the file to the root of the Group/OneDrive, and I'm not able to select a subfolder of a group :(

One final update, this feature has now been officially launched as part of yesterday's "New to Office 365 in November—new collaboration capabilities and more" announcement:
"Outlook already lets you attach cloud-based documents to an email, helping you better collaborate with others using a single version of the file. Now you can easily transform a traditional attachment into a shared cloud document right within Outlook. Upload a file to your own OneDrive or a document library as part of an Office 365 Group. Then specify sharing permissions for the email recipients. Get started with cloud attachments in a few easy steps."

Not sure if it is related, but ever since yesterday, I can't save or upload attachments within Outlook. Everytime I rightclick an attachment I only see "Cancel Download" instead of all the previous options.

Actually, you have such an option via the Insert File button in the ribbon...
But I've never been able to figure out how the related list of SPO sites is generated.

I imagine this would be quite complex since it would have to figure out all of the team sites that you are a member of - and in most large companies this could be a very long list. But yes, it would be a good feature.

Current Channel Version 1611 (Build 7571.2075).
Option present and working (as well as in the latest previous builds).
