There are some upcoming improvements to the Office 365 App Launcher that just appeared on the roadmap that is worth knowing about, that are in development:
"We’re introducing a new way to explore and understand all the apps in your Office 365 subscription with the Office 365 App Gallery. This additional view is accessed via the App Launcher and Office 365 Homepage to help users learn about the apps that are available to them."
Feature ID: 20468
"We’re updating the Office 365 App Launcher to help you get more done from anywhere in Office 365. Changes include a simplified apps list, access to recent documents, and improved navigation of company-wide apps and services."
Feature ID: 20465
This sounds great and as Office 365 grows with more services, a simplified interface that helps bring these together is only going to help with productivity.

We now have more details via the Message center and a first look at the improved app launcher! The rollout begins mid-October to First Release with a completed rollout early 2018.
This updated app launcher is more personalized and a simpler way to help users open and switch between the apps they use the most.
More particulars include the redesigned main view now emphasizes the most used applications across Office 365. It also highlights additional apps relevant to your users. For example, teachers and students may see education-specific apps.
With the new app launcher, any additional apps that aren’t already pinned by default, and a user has opened in the previous 45 days, will be automatically added to their main view. Further info available here.
By the way, custom tiles appear in their own 'Admin selected apps' section in the All apps list. They will only be shown in the main view if pinned by users.

Some welcome changes to the App launcher. We have been seeking ways in which to segment or compartmentalize the tiles, so seems this is heading in the right direction.
Some questions about “most used Office 365 apps” vs. “apps chosen for specific types of users”.

Good questions Alon. I took the "most used Office 365 apps" to be the core apps that typically most Office 365 users use, for that particular licence assignment, that is also influenced be additional types of users as mentioned such as student, teacher or Dynamics 365 user.
As you have pointed out, how exactly are these apps specifically chosen and how might they be managed in any way, isn't clear. We know any apps used 45 days prior to the rollout, are automatically added to the main view and after the rollout, these apps are set and then can be changed manually by the user but not much more than that.
If I come across any additional information about this, I'll post it here.

If we could have more of this advance notice, with this type of useful material in advance before the event, that would be welcome. Maybe some of our collective feedback, has been taken on board?

So, has anyone seen the new App Launcher out in the wild yet?
We've received the App Gallery, but not the launcher.
Feedback about the Gallery:

Thanks for the reminder Ivan. I checked, I have the app gallery (FR tenant), for anyone looking out for it, access it from office.com and the 'Explore all your apps' option on the front page. No sign of the new app launcher yet!
I agree with your feedback as well, the presentation is great but the arrangement could be better used perhaps, without making it too cluttered or less accessible.

Hey, your highlighted apps are actually in a 2 column layout - what I suggested. Mines "full-width". Also, what is the "Newsfeed" app in your gallery?

Thanks, I see what you mean. Don't know why I have the 2 column layout and you don't (browser, screen res, glitch?). Newsfeed is just the old SharePoint app.

Here is an update for anyone looking out for the new Office 365 App Launcher. As of yesterday (7th November) the new App Launcher is being deployed to first release organizations and will remain in first release for the next 30 days at least.
Not seeing it in my tenant yet but will keep a lookout for it! I'm on select FR, wonder whether it will hit tenant FR first?

well - can't be long then :) does the new launcher possible have a different URL than the current one?
looks like Microsoft kicked off a roll out week, possibly multiple after all the Ignite announcements. This is gonna be a busy winter for me :p

Looks like the App Launcher (top left icon) is available to us now (tenant target release). Now for the grand finale - the new portal (which we don't have yet) :)
Looks like Microsoft also tweaked the top bar, by reducing the boldness and size of all icons and text. I kind of liked the large ones better. The new font size looks a little skinny.

I see one strange thing with this new app launcher. When I click a tile the app opens in a new tabb. When I go to the three dots on the tile I can select open in new app.
Isn't the right way open in same tab when I click the tile and open in new tab when I use the option through the three dots?
Nov 15 2017 10:12 PM
Agreed. Please Microsoft, stop opening so many browser tabs. My users are already going bonkers over this and complain that they can't keep up with so many tabs. Not everyone is an IT literate and can manage many tabs and not lose oversight.
